Tony Antoine Szirmaï medallist and sculptor was born in Hungary in 1871. He entered the Budapest School of Decorative Arts, and later studied under Prof. Eberle at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. He moved to Italy, where he studied under Prof. Kopf for two years at the Palazzo Venezia in Rome. In 1892 he- went to Paris and entered the studio of the Master Ernest Barrias. Szirmaï died in 1938.

1818, Sweden. GUDMUND J?RAN ADLERBETH (1751-1818). By Johan Salmson. Bronze 42mm. $75. Sorry, SOLD (November, 2023) ———— Noted for his translations of the works of Virgil, Horace and Ovid, Adlerbeth was a member of the Royal Academy of Music (1773), the Swedish Academy (1786), the Royal Academy of History and Antiquities (1786), and the Academy of Sciences (1788). He was also protocol secretary (1774) and then personal secretary (1778) to King Gustav III.

The rev. depicts a personification of the Academy, in Roman garb, seated in front of an urn, clearly in mourning, holding a wreath; a cithara behind; a sphinx in front.
The rev. legend NULLI FLEBILIOR (?no one is more mournful?) echoes Horace?s comment
about Vergil in Odes 1.24.9-12 regarding the death of their mutual friend Quintilius Varus.

Raymond Delamarre was born in Paris on June 8, 1890. He studied under his father, an engraver, and under Jules Coutan at l’École des beaux-arts de Paris. He was also a student of Rodin. He was mobilized in World War I and was wounded and captured in 1914. He returned to Paris following the war and won the first Grand Prize de Rome for Sculpture in 1919. He exhibited at the international expositions of 1925, 1931 and 1937. Delamarre is noted for large scale sculptures, and a bas-relief, Les Arts et Monuments Régionau on the liner ‘Normandie.”   He created a large body of medals and plaquettes. Louis Muller was born on February 22 1902 at Vénissieux into a family of modest means. He started to work with metals at the age of 13. He was apprenticed to various jewelers and silversmiths in Lyon. After completing his national service in 1923 he entered the atelier of sculptor Jean-Baptiste Larrivé at the École des Beaux-Arts de Lyon. He later moved to Paris where he studied under Sculpture under Henri Bouchard and medal engraving under Henry Dropsy and Aguste Patey. Muller also studied at the private academy established by André Lavrillier. In 1929 he won the second prix de Rome in medal engraving and in 1932 won the premier prix de Rome. Muller worked for the Monnaie de Paris and for various private makers of medals. He died at Antony in 1957.

Hurbin, He became a member of the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais in 1925 and won an honorable mention for a plaster model for a statue of Leopold II that was erected at Namur, and won a bronze medal in 1935. Demanet died at Ixelles on February 7, 1964.

1890, France. IN LABORE QUIES. By Louis Oscar Roty (1846-1911, Grand Prix de Rome 1875). Silvered-bronze plaquette 53mm x 50mm. $175. Sorry, SOLD (October, 2021)

Louis Oscar Roty was born at Paris on June 11, 1846. He initially studied painting at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts under Lecoq and Boisbaudran. It is reported that he lost the money for a paint box and subsequently enrolled in a life-drawing class and thence into sculpting. This trajectory would eventually lead to his career as the most celebrated medallist of his time. Along the way, he studied in the atelier of the statuary Augustin Dumont and under Ponscarme, Chapu and Chaplain. He won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1875. Roty spent three years in Rome, where he modeled a number of waxes. In 1888 he was elected to the Acad?mie des Beaux-Arts. He took the grand prize at the International Exposition in 1889. Roty was a commander of the L?gion d?Honneur. He was responsible for reintroducing the plaquette, an art form that had been neglected since the Renaissance. His ?Semeuse? (sower) was widely used on French coins and stamps. He died in Paris on March 23, 1911.

Henry Dropsy was born in Paris on January 21, 1885, into a family of sculptors.  He learned his craft under his father Jean-Baptiste Émile Dropsy. He later studied at l’École Supérieure des Beaux Arts. He was a professor of medal engraving at the school for many years. Dropsy became a member of the Institut in 1942 and a member of the Commission Administrative and of the Commission du Dictionaire. He created many medals. A large collection of his work is held at the Monnaie de Paris, which put on a special exhibition of his medals in 1964, the catalogue for which remains a standard reference. His earliest works are in the art nouveau style. His style evolved considerably over his long career. Dropsy died at Veneux-Les-Sablon on November 2, 1969.

France. FRANÇOIS MICHEL. By Pierre Turin (1891-1968, Grand Prix de Rome in 1920). Bronze 68mm. Published by the Monnaie de Paris, but not included in their Catalogue Général Illustré. $90.

Pierre Turin was born in Sucy-en-Brie (Val-de-Marne) on 3 August, 1891. He trained as a steel engraver and became a student at the École Nationale Supèrieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He studied medal engraving under Henri Auguste Jules Patey and Fréderic-Charles Victor de Vernon. He participated several times in the competition for the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving, receiving a deuxième second Grand Prix in 1914, a premier second Grand Prix in 1919 and finally winning the competition in 1920. He had a distinguished career as a medalist and designer of coins.  He is noted for his many works with a bold, Art Deco style, in particular the prize medal from the 1925 Exposition Internationale Des Arts Decoratifs Et Industriels Moderns in Paris. In 1938 he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur. Turin died on July 25, 1968 in Sucy-en-Brie, where he had been born.
