Pierre-Alexandre Morlon (1878-1951) was born at M?con. He initially worked under his father, a marble worker. He later moved to Paris, where he studied under the sculptors Falgui?re and Merci?. He became a regular exhibitor at the Salon of the Soci?t? des Artistes Fran?ais. He produced several war memorials following World War I and is noted, among medal collectors, for his medals related to World War I. He was made a Chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur in 1927.

1935, France. SYNDICAT PROFESSIONNEL DES PRODUCTEURS ET DISTRIBUTEURS ?LECTRIQUE. By Georges Contaux (1891-1984). Bronze 50mm. Cased. $90. Sorry, SOLD (April, 2021) ———- Georges Contaux was born in Paris. He entered the ?cole Boulle, where he studied sculpture and engraving. He joined the 26?me R?giment d?artillerie de campagne at Chartres in 1911. Contaux was wounded during World War I and had two fingers amputated. In 1921 he received an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais. From 1922 to 1923 he worked for the engraver Pierre Lasserre (1870-1943). He then established himself at Vigneux-sur-Seine, where he remained, for the rest of his life, working as a sculptor and medallist. We was a prolific medallist producing about twenty-five hundred medals over the span of fifty years from 1930 to 1980. About fifteen hundred of his medals were religious and another eight hundred related to sports.

France. ALLEGORY OF INDUSTRY WITH MERCURY. By Jean-Baptiste Émile Dropsy (1848-1923). Uniface cast iron studio model approximately 9 inches in diameter. The patina is darker in color than suggested by the pictures. $500.

Jean-Baptiste Émile Dropsy was born in 1848 into a family of marble sculptors. He abandoned his family’s profession to pursue a career in metal engraving with Lemoine in Paris. He specialized in producing religious medals, but also produced other works, some of which he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he won a second and third prize. He was succeeded in his profession by his better known son, Henry. Émile died in 1923.

Louis Desvignes, sculptor and medallist,was born on November 14 1877 at Creusot (Sa?ne-et-Loire), He was a student of Raoul. Verlet, Paul Auban and Henri Dubois at l’?cole des Beaux-Arts de Paris . He was a soci?taire du Salon des Artistes Fran?ais and won a gold medal in 1932. Desvignes died in Paris on June 22, 1934.

Henry (Henri-Eug?ne) Nocq was born in Saint-Mand? (Val-de-Marne) in 1869. He studied under the sculptor, Henri-Michel-Antoine Chapu. Starting in 1887 he exhibited at the Salon of the Soci?t? des Artistes Fran?ais. He won a silver medal at the Universal Exhibition in 1900. In 1907 he was made a Chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur. He was interested in and wrote about art theory. Nocq created medals, plaquettes, sculpture and many artistically designed everyday objects. He died in 1944.

1933, France. GABRIEL HANOTAUX, Minister of Foreign Affairs. By Pierre Turin (1891-1968, Grand Prix de Rome in 1920). Bronze 68mm. Issued by the Monnaie de Paris, but apparently missing from the Catalogue Général Illustré. $100.

Pierre Turin was born in Sucy-en-Brie (Val-de-Marne) on 3 August, 1891. He trained as a steel engraver and became a student at the École Nationale Supèrieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He studied medal engraving under Henri Auguste Jules Patey and Fréderic-Charles Victor de Vernon. He participated several times in the competition for the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving, receiving a deuxième second Grand Prix in 1914, a premier second Grand Prix in 1919 and finally winning the competition in 1920. He had a distinguished career as a medalist and designer of coins.  He is noted for his many works with a bold, Art Deco style, in particular the prize medal from the 1925 Exposition Internationale Des Arts Decoratifs Et Industriels Moderns in Paris. In 1938 he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur. Turin died on July 25, 1968 in Sucy-en-Brie, where he had been born.
