He was born at Courtrai in 1861. He studied sculpture under his father and later at the Academy of Brussels. In 1885 he won the second Grand Prix de Rome. In 1889 he won the first Grand Prix for sculpture at the Academy of Brussels and a gold medal at the International Exposition in Cologne. A brief biography and a complete catalogue of his medallic works is provided in GODEFROID DEVRESE 1861-1941 by Poels, Vandamme and Van Dreiessche.

France. ST. JOAN OF ARC. By Oscar Roty (1846-1911. Grand Prix de Rome, 1875). Silver (stamped 1ARGENT) 45mm. $395. Sorry, SOLD (October, 2021) ———- Louis Oscar Roty was born at Paris on June 11, 1846. He initially studied painting at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts under Lecoq and Boisbaudran. It is reported that he lost the money for a paint box and subsequently enrolled in a life-drawing class and thence into sculpting. This trajectory would eventually lead to his career as the most celebrated medallist of his time. Along the way, he studied in the atelier of the statuary Augustin Dumont and under Ponscarme, Chapu and Chaplain. He won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1875. Roty spent three years in Rome, where he modeled a number of waxes. In 1888 he was elected to the Acad?mie des Beaux-Arts. He took the grand prize at the International Exposition in 1889. Roty was a commander of the L?gion d?Honneur. He was responsible for reintroducing the plaquette, an art form that had been neglected since the Renaissance. His ?Semeuse? (sower) was widely used on French coins and stamps. He died in Paris on March 23, 1911.

Raymond Delamarre was born in Paris on June 8, 1890. He studied under his father, an engraver, and under Jules Coutan at l’École des beaux-arts de Paris. He was also a student of Rodin. He was mobilized in World War I and was wounded and captured in 1914. He returned to Paris following the war and won the first Grand Prize de Rome for Sculpture in 1919. He exhibited at the international expositions of 1925, 1931 and 1937. Delamarre is noted for large scale sculptures, and a bas-relief, Les Arts et Monuments Régionau on the liner ‘Normandie.”   He created a large body of medals and plaquettes. Alphone-Eug?ne Lechevrel was born in Paris in either 1848 or 1850. He studied under H. Fran?ois. He worked as a sculptor in various media, but also designed some stamps. Lechevrel first exhibited at the Salon in 1873 and won a medal in 1884. In 1877 he traveled to England to revive the art of engraving on layered glass. Lechevrel died in Paris in 1924.

Henry Dropsy was born in Paris on January 21, 1885, into a family of sculptors.  He learned his craft under his father Jean-Baptiste Émile Dropsy. He later studied at l’École Supérieure des Beaux Arts. He was a professor of medal engraving at the school for many years. Dropsy became a member of the Institut in 1942 and a member of the Commission Administrative and of the Commission du Dictionaire. He created many medals. A large collection of his work is held at the Monnaie de Paris, which put on a special exhibition of his medals in 1964, the catalogue for which remains a standard reference. His earliest works are in the art nouveau style. His style evolved considerably over his long career. Dropsy died at Veneux-Les-Sablon on November 2, 1969.

He was admitted to the Soci?t? des artistes fran?ais and exhibited at the Salon des artistes fran?ais, where he won a gold medal in 1937. He was made a chevalier of the Legion d’Honneur in 1929. Fraisse died in Paris on September 13, 1945
