1963, France. 800TH ANNIVERSARY OF NOTRE DAME CATHEDRAL. By Henry Dropsy. Silver (1ARGENT on edge). Cased. $225. Sorry, SOLD (May, 2023) ———- Henry Dropsy was born in Paris on January 21, 1885, into a family of sculptors. He learned his craft under his father Jean-Baptiste ?mile Dropsy. He later studied at l??cole Sup?rieure des Beaux Arts. He was a professor of medal engraving at the school for many years. Dropsy became a member of the Institut in 1942 and a member of the Commission Administrative and of the Commission du Dictionaire. He created many medals. A large collection of his work is held at the Monnaie de Paris, which put on a special exhibition of his medals in 1964, the catalogue for which remains a standard reference. His earliest works are in the art nouveau style. His style evolved considerably over his long career. Dropsy died at Veneux-Les-Sablon on November 2, 1969.

1932, France. CONCOURS MUSICAL DE ROANNE. By Claude Mascaux (1882-1965). Gilt bronze 50mm. $175. Sorry, SOLD (August, 2022)

Léon-Claude Mascaux was born in Saint-Germain-en-Lay (Yvelines) on June 13 1882,  He studied under the sculptors Landowski and Bouchard. He first exhibited at the Salon of the Société des Beaux Arts in 1921. In 1924 he won a medal in the artistic comptetion of the Olympic Games. In the following year he won a Grand Prix at the Exposition des Arts Déoratifs et Industriels Moderns for a series seven sports-themed medals. Unlike his contemporaries, he eschewed the reducing machine and cut his models directly into the plaster in the actual size of his intended medals. His medals typically reflect a strong Art Deco style. Mascaux died at Fontainebleau on March 8 1965.

He entered the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1857. He studied under the sculptor, Jouffroy, and Eugene-Andr? Oudin?, the medallist. He won the first prize at the Concours de Rome in 1862. He studied in Italy from 1864 to 1868. Cahplain was elected to the Acad?mie des Beaux-Arts in 1881 and became an officer of the L?gion d’Honneur in 1888.

Sorry, SOLD ————- Fr?d?ric-Charles Victor de Vernon, sculptor and medallist was born at Paris in 1858. He studied under Jules Cavelier, Chaplain and Tasset. He exhibited at the Salon and won a third prize in 1884 and the Prix de Rome in 1887. In 1900 he won a gold medal at the Universal Exposition and was made a Chevalier of the L?gion d?Honneur. Vernon died in 1912.

1846, Belgium. THE CHURCH OF NOTRE DAME AT TONGRES. By Jacques and Leopold Wiener. Bronze 50mm. Hoydonck 16, Reinecke 14. $80. Sorry, SOLD (April, 2024)

Jacques Wiener, whose given name was Jacob, was born on March 2, 1815, at Hoerstgen (Rhine Province) to Hungarian parents. He seems to have started using Jacques as his name when he moved to Belgium. At the age of 13 he went to live with his uncle Baruth, an artist, and studied drawing, modelling and engraving. In 1835 he moved to Paris to perfect his skills and in 1839 moved to Brussels, where he established himself as an engraver. He became a naturalized Belgian in 1845. He created an extensive body of medals and is best known for his finely detailed architectural medals, especially his series of Most Remarkable Edifices. He is also widely known for engraving the first Belgian postage stamp. Wiener died in Brussels in 1899.
