He studied in England, Germany and at l??cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He worked as a sculptor, painter and medallist. Spicer-Simpson travelled extensively and lived for a time in America. He is noted in particular for his cast portrait medallions, taken from life. He died 1960

He was a student of Millet, Gauthier and Tasset. He began exhibiting at the Salon in 1889 and becase a Soci?taire des Artistes Fran?ais in 1907. He became a Chevalier of the L?gion d?Honneur in 1933. Rasumny died in 1940.

France. SHEEP DOG. By Georges Contaux (1891-1984). Bronze 84mm. $125. Sorry, SOLD (August, 2019) – – – – – Georges Contaux was born in Paris. He entered the ?cole Boulle, where he studied sculpture and engraving. He joined the 26?me R?giment d?artillerie de campagne at Chartres in 1911. Contaux was wounded during World War I and had two fingers amputated. In 1921 he received an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais. From 1922 to 1923 he worked for the engraver Pierre Lasserre (1870-1943). He then established himself at Vigneux-sur-Seine, where he remained, for the rest of his life, working as a sculptor and medallist. We was a prolific medalist producing about twenty-five hundred medals over the span of fifty years from 1930 to 1980. About fifteen hundred of his medals were religious and another eight hundred related to sports.

France. SATYR. By Pierre Turin (1891-1968. Grand Prix de Rome in 1920). Octagonal cast bronze 84mm x 84mm. $600. Sorry, SOLD (October, 2020) ———— Pierre Turin was born in Sucy-en-Brie (Val-de-Marne) on 3 August 1891. He trained as a steel engraver and became a student at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He studied medal engraving under Henri Auguste Jules Patey and Fr?deric-Charles Victor de Vernon. He participated several times in the competition for the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving, receiving a deuxi?me second Grand Prix in 1914, a premier second Grand Prix in 1919 and finally winning the competition in 1920. He had a distinguished career as a medalist and designer of coins. He is noted for his many works with a bold, Art Deco style, in particular the prize medal from the 1925 Exposition Internationale Des Arts Decoratifs Et Industriels Moderns in Paris. In 1938 he was made a Chevalier of the L?gion d?Honneur. Turin died in 1968.

France. ORPHEUS. By Marie-Alexandre Coudray. Bronze 68mm. Obv: Bust of Orpheus clutching a lyre. Rev: Fame seated on a rectangular tablet, violin and branches. Catalogue G?n?rale Illustr? vol. 3 100/C, Maier 223, Classens 40. $50. ——— Marie-Alexandre Lucien Coudray was born in Paris on February 21 1864. He studied at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts and was a student of Dumont, Thomas, Allouard and Ponscarme. In 1893 he won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving for Orph?e endort Cerb?re aux sons de sa lyre (Orpheus putting Cerebus to sleep by the sound of his lyre), In 1898 he won a first prize at the Salon and a silver medal at the Universal Exposition. Coudray?s best known work is his portrait of Orpheus, which was offered for sale by the Monnaie de Paris, at the Universal Exposition in 1900. 4,500 examples which struck to meet the demand. Coudray died in 1932.

One of Masscaux’s scarcer medals depicting a sports activity in animal form. $250 ————— L?on-Claude Mascaux was born in Saine-Germain-en-Lay (Yvelines) on June 13 1882, He studied under the sculptors Landowski and Bouchard. He first exhibited at the Salon of the Soci?t? des Beaux Arts in 1921. In 1924 he won a medal in the artistic comptetion of the Olumpic Games. In the following year he won a Grand Prix at the Exposition des Arts D?oratifs et Industriels Moderns for a series seven sports-themed medals. Unlike his contemporaries, he eschewed the reducing machine and cut his models directly into the plaster in the actual size of his intended medals. His medals typically reflect a strong Art Deco style. Mascaux died at Fontainebleau on March 8 1965.
