France. CENTENARY OF LA NATIONALE (Insurance Company). By Henry Dropsy (1885-1969). Bronze 71mm. Slight cabinet friction on the highest points of relief. $90. ———— Henry Dropsy was born in Paris on January 21, 1885, into a family of sculptors. He learned his craft under his father Jean-Baptiste ?mile Dropsy. He later studied at l??cole Sup?rieure des Beaux Arts. He was a professor of medal engraving at the school for many years. Dropsy became a member of the Institut in 1942 and a member of the Commission Administrative and of the Commission du Dictionaire. He created many medals. A large collection of his work is held at the Monnaie de Paris, which put on a special exhibition of his medals in 1964, the catalogue for which remains a standard reference. His earliest works are in the art nouveau style. His style evolved considerably over his long career. Dropsy died at Veneux-Les-Sablon on November 2, 1969.

Levillain died in Paris on January 8, 1905.

Although many artists began creating medals soon after Pisanello introduced this new medium, his
medals are generally regarded as the finest of the period.

He was born at Courtrai in 1861. He studied sculpture under his father and later at the Academy of Brussels. In 1885 he won the second Grand Prix de Rome. In 1889 he won the first Grand Prix for sculpture at the Academy of Brussels and a gold medal at the International Exposition in Cologne. A brief biography and a complete catalogue of his medallic works is provided in GODEFROID DEVRESE 1861-1941 by Poels, Vandamme and Van Dreiessche.

In 1908 he won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving. In 1928 he won a medal of honor at the Salon and was made a Chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur in the following year. He designed a number of coins for foreign governments. Dammann died in 1939.

– – – – Georges Dupr? (1869-1909, French sculptor and medalist was born at Saint-?tienne, Loire. He was descended from Augustin Dupr?, a medallist at the time of the French Revolution. He studied under Thomas and Roty. He won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome in 1896. In 1899 he sent his plaquette ?Salut au Soleil? and ? M?ditation? from Rome for display at the Salon, where he was awarded a third-prize medal. Dupr? suffered from a lifetime of poor health and died at an early age in 1909. He was regarded by his contemporaries as one of the leading exponents of medallic art.

His teachers tried to steer him towards studying science, but he preferred to pursue a career in sculpture. In 1924 he entered l??cole des Beaux-Arts, where he studied under Paul Landowski, In 1932 he won the premier grand prix de Rome in Sculpture. He had a distinguished career as a sculptor, creating many public works and winning numerous prizes. He also created medals and designed a portrait of Marianne used on 5, 10 and 20 centimes coins. Lagriffoul died at Boulogne-Billancourt on August 22 1981.
