The finish of this medal appears to be somewhat later. It is slightly glossy with a somewhat pinkish tone, a finish that seems to have been used in the late 1950s and early 1960s. $125. Jean Émile Louis de Vernon (known as Jean Vernon) was the son of medallist and sculptor Frédéric-Charles Victor de Vernon. He was born in Paris on April 1, 1897. Vernon studied at the École  des Arts Décoratifs and at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, under Jules Coutan and Hippolyte Jules Lefèbvre. He first exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1922 and won a silver medal in 1924 and a gold medal in 1936. Vernon worked primarily as a sculptor, but created medals, including his famous series of medals depicting scenes from Jean de la Fontaine’s Fables. He died in Paris on September 9, 1975.

Raymond Delamarre was born in Paris on June 8, 1890. He studied under his father, an engraver, and under Jules Coutan at l’École des beaux-arts de Paris. He was also a student of Rodin. He was mobilized in World War I and was wounded and captured in 1914. He returned to Paris following the war and won the first Grand Prize de Rome for Sculpture in 1919. He exhibited at the international expositions of 1925, 1931 and 1937. Delamarre is noted for large scale sculptures, and a bas-relief, Les Arts et Monuments Régionau on the liner ‘Normandie.”   He created a large body of medals and plaquettes. Johannes-Cornelis Wienecke was born to Dutch parents in Heilidenstadt, in Saxe-Prussia on March 24 1872. He studied at the Quellinus School in Amsterdam and the Academy of Beaux-Arts in Antwerp. He spent five years in Paris, where he studied at the Acad?mie Julian, the ?cole des Beaux Arts and the Libre Acad?mie Colla Rossi. He worked under Auguste Patey at the Monnaie de Paris. Wienecke returned to the Netherlands and became an engraver, and later head engraver at the Royal Mint in Utrecht. He won the silver medal in sculpture in the Prix de Rome in 1896. He created about three hundred medals over the course of his career, remaining faithful to the art nouveau style he had been introduced to in Paris. Weinecke died at Apeldoorn on November 8 1945.

Franz Huygelen was born on19 August 1878, in Antwerp. He studied at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp and, under Thomas Vin?otte, at the Hoger Instituut. He won the Belgian Prix de Rome. Huygelen died at Ukkel in 1940. He created a number of medals, which were struck in a large format without a border. They have a distinctive, free-flowing style.
