Ferdinand de Saint-Urbain was born at Nancy on June 30, 1658 (or possibly 1654), the son of Claude Augustin de Saint-Urbain, a goldsmith and engraver. In 1673 he was appointed Mint-engraver at Bologna. In 1683 he moved to Rome, where he was appointed Chief engraver by Innocent XI. He returned to Nancy in 1704 and was appointed as Engraver at the mint there in 1797. He created over 120 medals, most of which have a distinctive border, such as that on this medal. Saint-Urbain died in Nancy on January 10, 1738.

Georges Guiraud was born at Toulouse on August 5 1901. He was the son of Albert Guiraud, who was a painter and illuminator of documents. Guiraud studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Toulouse and later at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He worked in the workshop of Jean Boucher. Guiraud won the First Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1926. He died at Saint-Hilaire-au-Temple (Marne) on May 12, 1989.

Jacques Wiener, whose given name was Jacob, was born on March 2, 1815, at Hoerstgen (Rhine Province) to Hungarian parents. He seems to have started using Jacques as his name when he moved to Belgium. At the age of 13 he went to live with his uncle Baruth, an artist, and studied drawing, modelling and engraving. In 1835 he moved to Paris to perfect his skills and in 1839 moved to Brussels, where he established himself as an engraver. He became a naturalized Belgian in 1845. He created an extensive body of medals and is best known for his finely detailed architectural medals, especially his series of Most Remarkable Edifices. He is also widely known for engraving the first Belgian postage stamp. Wiener died in Brussels in 1899.

Robert Eugène Joseph Cochet was born in Paris on May 6, 1903. He studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where specialized in designing medals coins and small bronzes under Auguste Carli and Lucien Bazor and. He began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1929 and was made a member. In 1954 he won a diploma and medal at the international exposition in Madrid. Cochet died at Moulins on July 26, 1988.

He attended the Art School in Augsburg, and later the art schools in Dresden, Leipzig , Berlin and Dusseldorf. He spent five years in Paris and later moved to Munich, where he settled in 1904. Goetz was a prolific medallist, most noted for his satirical works, especially those of World War I. Goetz died in 1950. His medals are catalogued in two volumes by Gunther Kienast.
