Johannes-Cornelis Wienecke was born to Dutch parents in Heilidenstadt, in Saxe-Prussia on March 24 1872. He studied at the Quellinus School in Amsterdam and the Academy of Beaux-Arts in Antwerp. He spent five years in Paris, where he studied at the Acad?mie Julian, the ?cole des Beaux Arts and the Libre Acad?mie Colla Rossi. He worked under Auguste Patey at the Monnaie de Paris. Wienecke returned to the Netherlands and became an engraver, and later head engraver at the Royal Mint in Utrecht. He won the silver medal in sculpture in the Prix de Rome in 1896. He created about three hundred medals over the course of his career, remaining faithful to the art nouveau style he had been introduced to in Paris. Weinecke died at Apeldoorn on November 8 1945.
