1956, Djibouti. COMPAGNIE DES SALINS DU MIDI ET DES SALINES DE DJIBOUTI. By Raymond Delamarre (1890-1986). Bronze 80mm. $120

Raymond Delamarre was born in Paris on June 8, 1890. He studied under his father, an engraver, and under Jules Coutan at l’École des beaux-arts de Paris. He was also a student of Rodin. He was mobilized in World War I and was wounded and captured in 1914. He returned to Paris following the war and won the first Grand Prize de Rome for Sculpture in 1919. He exhibited at the international expositions of 1925, 1931 and 1937. Delamarre is noted for large scale sculptures, and a bas-relief, Les Arts et Monuments Régionau on the liner ‘Normandie.”   He created a large body of medals and plaquettes. Delamarre died on February 28, 1986. Delamarre’s works, including his medals are discussed and illustrated in RAYMOND DELAMARRE, Sculpteur et Médailleur By Claire Maingon. Rennes, 1924

France. SCIENCE BONT?. By Alexandre-Louis-Marie Charpentier,(1856-1909). Cast bronze 215mm x 103mm. Maier 151. $900. Sorry, SOLD (January, 2020). —— Alexandre-Louis-Marie Charpentier, medalist, sculptor and craftsman was born in Paris in 1856. He initially trained as a jeweler, then worked under a medallist. This led him to entering L??cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts where he studied medal engraving from 1871 ? 1876 in the studio of Hubert Ponscarme. Charpentier first exhibited at the Salon in 1877 with a portrait medallion of his mother and in 1879 exhibited ?Tireur d?Arc,? a bas-relief, which was purchased by Alexandre Dumas. He with Ponscarme, Louis-Oscar Roty and others was responsible for the resurgence of medallic art in France in the late 19th century. Charpentier died at Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1909.

He studied under Henri-Michel-Antoine Chapu and Jules-Cl?ment Chaplain. He won the premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1890. He became a soci?taire des Artistes Fran?ais in 1898. In 1900 he won a silver medal at the Universal Exposition. Pillet was made a chevalier of the L?gion d’Honneur in 1911. He won the Salon?s medal of honor in 1923. Pillet died in 1960.

Raoul B?nard was born on 30 September 1881. He studied under the sculptor Coutan and the medallists Chaplain and Vernon. In 1911 he won the Prix de Rome for medal engraving and, in 1922, a silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais, followed by a gold medal two years later. He was later made a Chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur. B?nard died in 1961.
