From Robert- M?rignac?s series of plaquettes depicting women in regional costumes of France: Alsacienne, Angevine, Auvergnate, Boulonnaise, Bourbonnaise, Bressane, Bretone, Catalane, Charentaise, Limousine, Lorraine, Normanide, Olonnaise, Poitevine, Proven?ale, Saintongeaise, Vend?enne.

Ernesta Robert-M?rignac, sculptor and medallist was born at Saint-Omer on August 25 1849. She studied under Mlle Genevi?ve Granger, Mlle Darbefeille and Georges R?cipon. She exhibited four plaquettes in 1905 at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais and several medals in 1906 and at the 1924 Olympics. She was the daughter of fencing master Charles Gustave Robert and wife of another, ?mile M?rignac. Her nephew Lucien M?rignac won the gold medal in the 1900 Olympic Foil Masters event. Robert-M?rignac, died at Paris on February 28 1933.

1950, France. ADRIEN DE LEZAY-MARNESIA – 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST ÉCOLE NORMALE IN FRANCE. By Pierre Turin. Bronze 78mm. Cased. $100

Pierre Turin was born in Sucy-en-Brie (Val-de-Marne) on 3 August, 1891. He trained as a steel engraver and became a student at the École Nationale Supèrieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He studied medal engraving under Henri Auguste Jules Patey and Fréderic-Charles Victor de Vernon. He participated several times in the competition for the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving, receiving a deuxième second Grand Prix in 1914, a premier second Grand Prix in 1919 and finally winning the competition in 1920. He had a distinguished career as a medalist and designer of coins.  He is noted for his many works with a bold, Art Deco style, in particular the prize medal from the 1925 Exposition Internationale Des Arts Decoratifs Et Industriels Moderns in Paris. In 1938 he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur. Turin died on July 25, 1968 in Sucy-en-Brie, where he had been born.

Jacques Wiener, whose given name was Jacob, was born on March 2, 1815, at Hoerstgen (Rhine Province) to Hungarian parents. He seems to have started using Jacques as his name when he moved to Belgium. At the age of 13 he went to live with his uncle Baruth, an artist, and studied drawing, modelling and engraving. In 1835 he moved to Paris to perfect his skills and in 1839 moved to Brussels, where he established himself as an engraver. He became a naturalized Belgian in 1845. He created an extensive body of medals and is best known for his finely detailed architectural medals, especially his series of Most Remarkable Edifices. He is also widely known for engraving the first Belgian postage stamp. Wiener died in Brussels in 1899.

Hippolyte Lef?bvre, sculptor and medallist was born in Lille. He studied at the Acad?mie des Beaux-Arts in Lille, where he won first prizes in drawing and sculpture. He later entered the ?cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he won numerous prizes. He exhibited at the Salon and won the Grand Prix de Rome in sculpture in 1892. Lef?bvre won gold medals for medals that he exhibited at the 1900 Universal Exposition.

Ad?m?e Godard was an editor of medals in Paris. He served as the agent for Ovide Yencesse, Oscar Roty and others. He may also have engraved medals, but I have not encountered any of his work. He is not listed in Benezit?s or Eduoard-Joseph?s Dictionaries of artists. ——— Ovide Yencesse (1860-1947) was born at Dijon. He studied under Ponscarme, Thomas and Levillain at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He was director of the ?cole des Beaux-Arts at Dijon. He won gold medals at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais in 1900 and in 1920. Yencesse was made a Chevalier of the L?gion d?Honneur in 1900. Many of his medallic works have a distinctive, subtle effect using a soft, shallow relief.

Rudolf Mayer, sculptor and medallist, was born in Niedeck in Selesia on June 12 1846. He studied under Otto K?nig in Vienna. He became a professor at the School of Industrrial Arts in Karlsruhe. Mayer died in Karlsruhe on June 24 1916.

Raymond Persin was born at Carvin on December 21 1870. He studied and practiced law and made a name for himself by defending a female singer, who refused to wear a bathing suit in a production of Faust. He also studied art, most notably under sculptor Auguste Carli. He became a member of La Soci?t? Des Artistes Fran?ais. He exhibited medals at the Salon de Paris from 1909 to 1924, receiving an honorable mention in 1920. Persin died in Paris on June 28 1934.
In 1905 Persin married Madeleine Muleur, the daughter of an industrialist. Camille is presumably a relative of hers.
