Sorry, SOLD (November, 2022) ———— Ronald William Fordham Searle was born in Cambridge on March 3 1920. He is best known as a satirical cartoonist and illustrator, and for being the creator of St. Trinian?s School. He started creating medals long after he had established his reputation. Searle started drawing at the age of five and left school at the age of 15. He trained at Cambridge College of Arts and Technology (now Anglia Ruskin University). In 1939 he enlisted in the army. In 1942 he was stationed in Singapore. He fought in Malaya and was taken prisoner. Searle was moved to the Kwai Jungle, where he worked on the ?Death Railway.? He suffered considerably during his imprisonment, contracting beri-beri and malaria, and was subjected to beatings. His weight dropped to under 90 pounds. During his captivity he made drawings that documented the atrocities he observed. He kept them hidden. About 300 survived the war. They are documented in a book published in 1986. The originals are in the collection of the Imperial War Museum. After the War, Searle served as a courtroom artist at the Nuremberg trials. During the 1950s he produced an extraordinary amount of work, which was published in many leading publications, including Punch and the New Yorker. In 1961 he moved to Paris. He died on December 30, 2011 in Provence

Be became a professor at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts, a member of La Soci?t? Nationale des Beaux-Arts and of the Salon d?Automne. He created numerous medals and sculpture in carved wood and other materials.

1960, Senegal. COMPAGNIE DES EAUX ET EL?CTICIT? DEL?OUEST AFRICAIN. By Raymond Delamarre (1890-1986). Bronze 68mm. Cased. $125. ———– Raymond Delamarre was born in Paris on June 8, 1890. He studied under his father, an engraver, and under Jules Coutan at l’?cole des beaux-arts de Paris. He was also a student of Rodin. He was mobilized in World War I and was wounded and captured in 1914. He returned to Paris following the war and won the first Grand Prize de Rome for Sculpture in 1919. He exhibited at the international expositions of 1925, 1931 and 1937. Delamarre is noted for large scale sculptures, and a bas-relief, Les Arts et Monuments R?gionau on the liner ?Normandie.? He created a large body of medals and plaquettes. Delamarre died on February 28, 1986.

He studied under Chaplain. In 1908 he won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving. In 1928 he won a medal of honor at the Salon and was made a Chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur in the following year. He designed a number of coins for foreign governments. Dammann died in 1939.

He studied at the ?cole Germain Pilon under Charles Valton and Jules ?douard Roin?. He became a professor of drawing and worked as a medallisst and sculptor. He designed coins for Morocco, Monaco and Lebanon, and a considerable number of medals. Delannoy was made a Chevalier de la L?gion d’Honneur in 1947. He died in Paris on April 26, 1972.

Untrimmed bronze plaquette 59mm x 63mm. $120. ————- Jean ?mile Louis de Vernon (known as Jean Vernon) was the son of medallist and sculptor Fr?d?ric-Charles Victor de Vernon. He was born in Paris on April 1, 1897. Vernon studied at the ?cole des Arts D?coratifs and at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, under Jules Coutan and Hippolyte Jules Lef?bvre. He first exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais in 1922 and won a silver medal in 1924 and a gold medal in 1936. Vernon worked primarily as a sculptor, but created medals, including his famous series of medals depicting scenes from Jean de la Fontaine’s Fables. He died in Paris on September 9, 1975.

He studied at the ?cole des Beaux Arts in Toulouse and later moved to Paris to study sculpture. He received a scholarship for the Villa Abd-el-Tif in Algeria in 1908. He worked primarily as a sculptor and only turned to creating medals later in his career.
