France. MAXIMILIEN GAUTHIER, Journalist and Art Historian. By Pierre Turin (1891-1968). Bronze 68mm. Catalogue Général Illustré volume 4 1839/D. Small edge nick at the top, on the reverse. $90.

Pierre Turin was born in Sucy-en-Brie (Val-de-Marne) on 3 August, 1891. He trained as a steel engraver and became a student at the École Nationale Supèrieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He studied medal engraving under Henri Auguste Jules Patey and Fréderic-Charles Victor de Vernon. He participated several times in the competition for the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving, receiving a deuxième second Grand Prix in 1914, a premier second Grand Prix in 1919 and finally winning the competition in 1920. He had a distinguished career as a medalist and designer of coins.  He is noted for his many works with a bold, Art Deco style, in particular the prize medal from the 1925 Exposition Internationale Des Arts Decoratifs Et Industriels Moderns in Paris. In 1938 he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur. Turin died on July 25, 1968 in Sucy-en-Brie, where he had been born.

Sorry, SOLD (March, 2023) ———- L?on-Claude Mascaux was born in Saine-Germain-en-Lay (Yvelines) on June 13 1882, He studied under the sculptors Landowski and Bouchard. He first exhibited at the Salon of the Soci?t? des Beaux Arts in 1921. In 1924 he won a medal in the artistic comptetion of the Olumpic Games. In the following year he won a Grand Prix at the Exposition des Arts D?oratifs et Industriels Moderns for a series seven sports-themed medals. Unlike his contemporaries, he eschewed the reducing machine and cut his models directly into the plaster in the actual size of his intended medals. His medals typically reflect a strong Art Deco style. Mascaux died at Fontainebleau on March 8 1965.

He was a student of Jules Coutan and Auguste Carli. He began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais in 1923 and in 1924 he won the Grand Prix de Rome for sculpture. Sall? died on January 10, 1961 at Paimpol, France.

High relief cast bronze approximately 9 ? inches in diameter. $750. ———– Henri Michel Antoine Chapu was born on September 29 1833 at M?e-sur-Seine, where his parents worked as a coachman and housekeeper. He showed an aptitude for art and won a scholarship. He studied under James Pradier, Francisque Duret and L?on Cogniet at the ?cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1851 he won the second grand prix de Rome in medal engraving for ?Neptune Giving Birth to a Horse.? In 1853 he won the second Grand Prix de Rome in sculpture for ?Alexander’s Despair after the Death of Clitus. In 1855 he won the first Grand Prix de Rome jointly with Am?d?e Doublemard, His sculpture ?Cl?obis and Biton? was accidently damaged during transit, but was nonetheless selected unanimously by the jury. While at the Villa Medicis he made portrait medallions of some of his colleagues. He continued to make medals throughout his career and helped lead the revival of the medal ass an art form. He struggled in his early years. Chapu exhibited at the Salon from 1863 onwards. His statues of ?Mercury? of 1861 and ?Jeanne d’Arc? of 1870 were his big successes, and led to many commissions. He was made an Officer of the L?gion d?Honeur. Chapu died in Paris on April 21 1891.
