France. VIRGIN MARY. By Georges Contaux (1891-1984). Uniface cast bronze studio model approximately 176mm in diameter (central design: 158mm). Ex Delande & Cie. archive. $300. ——— Delande et Cie. of Paris was a company that manufactured and distributed medals, decorations, flags, and trophies. In was founded in the late 19th century and closed its doors in the 1980s. It had customers throughout the world and produced military decorations and uniform ornamentations for several governments. The Delande family broke up the business?s archives around 2010. ———- Georges Contaux was born on September 22, 1891 in Paris. He entered the ?cole Boulle, where he studied sculpture and engraving. He joined the 26?me R?giment d?artillerie de campagne at Chartres in 1911. Contaux was wounded during World War I and had two fingers amputated. In 1921 he received an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais. From 1922 to 1923 he worked for the engraver Pierre Lasserre (1870-1943). He then established himself at Vigneux-sur-Seine, where he remained, for the rest of his life, working as a sculptor and medallist. We was a prolific medallist producing about twenty-five hundred medals over the span of fifty years from 1930 to 1980. About fifteen hundred of his medals were religious, another eight hundred related to sports and about 150 were portrait medals. Contaux died at Vigneux-sur-Seine on September 15, 1984.

Jules-Cl?ment Chaplain (1839-1909) was born at Mortagne. He entered the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1857. He studied under the sculptor Jouffroy and Eugene-Andr? Oudin? the medallist. He won the first prize at the Concours de Rome in 1862. He studied in Italy from 1864 to? 1868. He was elected to the Acad?mie des Beaux-Arts in 1881 and became an officer of the L?gion d’Honneur in 1888.

Sorry, SOLD (February, 2024). ————- Jacques Wiener, whose given name was Jacob, was born on March 2, 1815, at Hoerstgen (Rhine Province) to Hungarian parents. He seems to have started using Jacques as his name when he moved to Belgium. At the age of 13 he went to live with his uncle Baruth, an artist, and studied drawing, modelling and engraving. In 1835 he moved to Paris to perfect his skills and in 1839 moved to Brussels, where he established himself as an engraver. He became a naturalized Belgian in 1845. He created an extensive body of medals and is best known for his finely detailed architectural medals, especially his series of Most Remarkable Edifices. He is also widely known for engraving the first Belgian postage stamp. Wiener died in Brussels in 1899.

Louis-Alexandre Bott?e (1852-1941) was born in Paris. At the age of 13 he was apprenticed to a button-making manufactory, where he was responsible for engraving dies. He later studied at the ?cole des Art D?coratifs. In 1869 he joined the atelier of Paulin Tasset and in 1871 he joined the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts. He won the Premiere Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1878 and a gold medal at the Salon of 1900. In 1903 he was made an Officier de la L?gion d?Honneur.

Pierre Turin (1891-1968) was a student at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He studied under Henri Auguste Jules Patey and Fr?deric-Charles Victor de Vernon. In 1920 he won the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving. He created many medals often with a bold Art Deco style.
