Raoul B?nard was born on 30 September, 1881. He studied under the sculptor Coutan and the medallists Chaplain and Vernon. In 1911 he won the Prix de Rome for medal engraving and, in 1922, a silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais, followed by a gold medal two years later. He was later made a Chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur. B?nard died in 1961.

At the age of 13 he was apprenticed to a button-making manufactory, where he was responsible for engraving dies. He later studied at the ?cole des Art D?coratifs. In 1869 he joined the atelier of Paulin Tasset and in 1871 he joined the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts. He won the Premiere Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1878 and a gold medal at the Salon of 1900. In 1903 he was made an Officier de la L?gion d?Honneur.

Luxembourg, Netherlands, Germany. ADOLPHE OF NASSAU WEILBURG, ARCHDUKE OF LUXEMBOURG. By Adolphe Rivet (1855-1908). Large cast bronze studio model. From the archive of the Delande company, Paris. 9 inches in diameter. $600.

Adolphe Rivet, sculptor and medallist, was born at Varetz (Corr?ze) on July 30 1855. He was a student at the ?cole des Beaux-Arts, where he studied under Jules Cavelier, Hubert Ponscarme and Oscar Roty. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais, where he received an honorable mention in 1888 and a second class medal in 1908. He died at Gentilly (Seine) on November 8 1925. ———— This is a “studio model,” from the Delande company archives, the main purpose of which would have been to serve as a model from which dies would have been made using a reducing machine. Only a very limited number of studio models would have been made with just a few being sold, disseminated or used for special purposes. In some cases, only one “master” studio model would have been created solely for use in the process of die-making. (Delande et Cie. of Paris was a company that manufactured and distributed medals, decorations, flags, and trophies. In was founded in the late 19th century and closed its doors in the 1980s. It had customers throughout the world and produced military decorations and uniform ornamentations for several governments).

Léon-Claude Mascaux was born in Saint-Germain-en-Lay (Yvelines) on June 13 1882,  He studied under the sculptors Landowski and Bouchard. He first exhibited at the Salon of the Société des Beaux Arts in 1921. In 1924 he won a medal in the artistic comptetion of the Olympic Games. In the following year he won a Grand Prix at the Exposition des Arts Déoratifs et Industriels Moderns for a series seven sports-themed medals. Unlike his contemporaries, he eschewed the reducing machine and cut his models directly into the plaster in the actual size of his intended medals. His medals typically reflect a strong Art Deco style. Mascaux died at Fontainebleau on March 8 1965.

Ferdinand Levillain was born at Plassy on July 29, 1937. He studied at the E?cole des Beaux-Arts de Paris and was a student of Fran?ois Jouffroy . From 1861 to 1903 he exhibited at the Salon des Artists Fran?ais. He worked for the goldsmiths Barbedienne and Christofle. He was made a chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur in 1892. Levillain died in Paris on January 8, 1905.

1972, France, Great Britain. GENERAL LECLERC DE HAUTECLOQUE. – CELEBRATION AT DALTON HALL, HULL, LONDON, WINDSOR. By Raymond Delamarre. Bronze 58mm. $60.

Raymond Delamarre was born in Paris on June 8 1890. He studied under his father, an engraver, and under Jules Coutan at l’École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He was also a student of Rodin. He was mobilized in World War I and was wounded and captured in 1914. He returned to Paris following the war and won the first Grand Prize de Rome for Sculpture in 1919. He exhibited at the international expositions of 1925, 1931 and 1937. Delamarre is noted for large scale sculptures, and a bas-relief, Les Arts et Monuments Régionau on the liner “Normandie.” He created a large body of medals and plaquettes. Delamarre died on February 28, 1986.

?mile-Antoine Bourdelle was born at Montauban in 1861. He was a painter, architect, and medallist, but is known primarily as a sculptor. He studied initially at the ?cole des Beaux Arts de Toulouse and was later accepted at the ?cole National des Beaux Arts de Paris and into the atlier of Falgi?re. He was widely regarded as one of the leading sculptors of his time and won many distinctions over the course of his career. Bourdelle died at Vesinet on October 1, 1929.

Pierre Turin was born in Sucy-en-Brie (Val-de-Marne) on 3 August, 1891. He trained as a steel engraver and became a student at the École Nationale Supèrieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He studied medal engraving under Henri Auguste Jules Patey and Fréderic-Charles Victor de Vernon. He participated several times in the competition for the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving, receiving a deuxième second Grand Prix in 1914, a premier second Grand Prix in 1919 and finally winning the competition in 1920. He had a distinguished career as a medalist and designer of coins.  He is noted for his many works with a bold, Art Deco style, in particular the prize medal from the 1925 Exposition Internationale Des Arts Decoratifs Et Industriels Moderns in Paris. In 1938 he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur. Turin died on July 25, 1968 in Sucy-en-Brie, where he had been born.

(1855), France. INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION – PALAIS D’INDUSTRIE, PAVILLION DU NORD. By Jacques Wiener. Bronze. 68mm. $150

Jacques Wiener, whose given name was Jacob, was born on March 2, 1815, at Hoerstgen (Rhine Province) to Hungarian parents. He seems to have started using Jacques as his name when he moved to Belgium. At the age of 13 he went to live with his uncle Baruth, an artist, and studied drawing, modelling and engraving. In 1835 he moved to Paris to perfect his skills and in 1839 moved to Brussels, where he established himself as an engraver. He became a naturalized Belgian in 1845. He created an extensive body of medals and is best known for his finely detailed architectural medals, especially his series of Most Remarkable Edifices. He is also widely known for engraving the first Belgian postage stamp. Wiener died in Brussels in 1899.
