Godefroid Devreese was one of Belgium’s most prolific medallists. He was born at Courtrai in 1861. He studied sculpture under his father and later at the Academy of Brussels. In 1885 he won the second Grand Prix de Rome. In 1889 he won the first Grand Prix for sculpture at the Academy of Brussels and a gold medal at the International Exposition in Cologne. Pierre-Victor Dautel, French sculptor and medallist was born at Valenciennes in 1873. He studied sculpture and architecture at the ?cole Acad?miques at Valenciennes and later studied sculpture at the ?cole Nationale et Sp?ciale des Beaux Arts at Paris. He studied medal engraving under Henri Dubois. He won various awards during his distinguished career and was made a Chevalier of the L?gion d?Honneur in 1929. Dautel died in 1954.

Albert de Jaeger was born on October 28, 1908, in Roubaix. He won the first prize at l’?cole des Beaux-Arts de Roubaix et de Tourcoing, and later the first prize at l’ l’?cole des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He was a student of Paul Niclausse, Henri Bouchard, Charles Despiau and Henry Dropsy. He won the premier grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1935 with La L?gende et l?Histoire. He created many sculptural works and an extensive body of medals. He spent most of his life at Meudon, where he bought the Villa Charles Schacher. He died in Paris on May 19, 1992.

Henry Dropsy was born in Paris on January 21, 1885, into a family of sculptors. He learned his craft under his father Jean-Baptiste ?mile Dropsy. He later studied at l??cole Sup?rieure des Beaux Arts. He was a professor of medal engraving at the school for many years. Dropsy became a member of the Institut in 1942 and a member of the Commission Administrative and of the Commission du Dictionaire. He created many medals. A large collection of his work is held at the Monnaie de Paris, which put on a special exhibition of his medals in 1964, the catalogue for which remains a standard reference. His earliest works are in the art nouveau style. His style evolved considerably over his long career. Dropsy died at Veneux-Les-Sablon on November 2, 1969.

Maurice Delannoy was born on March 11, 1885, in Paris. He studied at the ?cole Germain Pilon under Charles Valton and Jules ?douard Roin?. He became a professor of drawing and worked as a medallist and sculptor. He designed coins for Morocco, Monaco and Lebanon, and a considerable number of medals. Delannoy was made a Chevalier de la L?gion d’Honneur in 1947. He died in Paris on April 26, 1972.

Pierre Turin was born in Sucy-en-Brie (Val-de-Marne) on 3 August, 1891. He trained as a steel engraver and became a student at the École Nationale Supèrieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He studied medal engraving under Henri Auguste Jules Patey and Fréderic-Charles Victor de Vernon. He participated several times in the competition for the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving, receiving a deuxième second Grand Prix in 1914, a premier second Grand Prix in 1919 and finally winning the competition in 1920. He had a distinguished career as a medalist and designer of coins.  He is noted for his many works with a bold, Art Deco style, in particular the prize medal from the 1925 Exposition Internationale Des Arts Decoratifs Et Industriels Moderns in Paris. In 1938 he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur. Turin died on July 25, 1968 in Sucy-en-Brie, where he had been born. From 1861 to 1903 he exhibited at the Salon des Artists Fran?ais. He worked for the goldsmiths Barbedienne and Christofle. He was made a chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur in 1892. Levillain died in Paris on January 8, 1905.
