Henry Dropsy was born in Paris on January 21, 1885, into a family of sculptors. He learned his craft under his father Jean-Baptiste Émile Dropsy. He later studied at l’École Supérieure des Beaux Arts. He was a professor of medal engraving at the school for many years. Dropsy became a member of the Institut in 1942 and a member of the Commission Administrative and of the Commission du Dictionaire. He created many medals. A large collection of his work is held at the Monnaie de Paris, which put on a special exhibition of his medals in 1964, the catalogue for which remains a standard reference. His earliest works are in the art nouveau style. His style evolved considerably over his long career. Dropsy died at Veneux-Les-Sablon on November 2, 1969.

Samuel Grün, painter, sculptor, engraver and medalist was born on February 19 1869 in Tallin, Estonia, the son of Maurice Grün, a painter. He worked in London and Paris. Grün exhibited at the Société des Artistes Français and at the Salon of the Royal Academy in London. The exact date of his death is unknown, probably some time after the 1930s.

Maurice Delannoy was born on March 11, 1885, in Paris. He studied at the ?cole Germain Pilon under Charles Valton and Jules ?douard Roin?. He became a professor of drawing and worked as a medallisst and sculptor. He designed coins for Morocco, Monaco and Lebanon, and a considerable number of medals. Delannoy was made a Chevalier de la L?gion d’Honneur in 1947. He died in Paris on April 26, 1972.

Charles Victor Peter was born at Paris on December 20 1940. He studied art over the objections of his parents. He was a pupil of S?bastien Cornu, Fran?ois Th?odore Devaulx and Alexandre Falgui?re. He exhibited at the Salon and won a medal in 1879. He won a gold medal at the Universal Exposition of 1900. Peter worked in various media, but specialized in sculpture and medallic art. As a medallist, Peter is best known for his depictions of animals. He became professor of sculptur at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieur des Beaux-Arts in 1901 and was made a chevalier of the L?gion d’Honneur. Peter died on March 20 1918.

Jean-Baptiste Daniel-Dupuis (1848-1899), French painter, sculptor and medallist entered l’École Nationale Supérieur des Beaux-Arts at the age of seventeen. In 1868 he won the second Prix de Rome for medal engraving and the first Grand Prix de Rome in 1872. He exhibited regularly at the Salon. In 1898 he was made an officer of the Légion d’Honneur. Daniel-Dupuis died tragically in 1899, when he was shot in his sleep by his wife, who had a history of mental illness. His wife then turned the gun on herself and committed suicide.  Daniel-Dupuis created an extensive oeuvre of medallic works.

1954, France. CENTENARY OF COMPAGNIE CENTRALE D’ASSURANCE MARITIMES. By Georges Contaux (1891-1984). Bronze 100mm. $120.

Georges Contaux was born on September 22, 1891 in Paris. He entered the ?cole Boulle, where he studied sculpture and engraving. He joined the 26?me R?giment d?artillerie de campagne at Chartres in 1911. Contaux was wounded during World War I and had two fingers amputated. In 1921 he received an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais. From 1922 to 1923 he worked for the engraver Pierre Lasserre (1870-1943). He then established himself at Vigneux-sur-Seine, where he remained, for the rest of his life, working as a sculptor and medallist. We was a prolific medallist producing about twenty-five hundred medals over the span of fifty years from 1930 to 1980. About fifteen hundred of his medals were religious, another eight hundred related to sports and about 150 were portrait medals. Contaux died at Vigneux-sur-Seine on September 15, 1984.

Charles Philippe Germain Aristide Pillet, sculptor and medallist was born on 20 July 1869 in Paris . He studied under Henri-Michel-Antoine Chapu and Jules-Cl?ment Chaplain. He won the premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1890. He became a soci?taire des Artistes Fran?ais in 1898. In 1900 he won a silver medal at the Universal Exposition. Pillet was made a chevalier of the L?gion d’Honneur in 1911. He won the Salon?s medal of honor in 1923. Pillet died in 1960.

Albert de Jaeger was born at Roubaix on October 28 1908. He studied at l’École des Beaux-Arts de Roubaix et de Tourcoing and at l’École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. He was a student of Paul Niclausse, Henri Bouchard, Charles Despiau and Henri Dropsy . In 1935 he won the premier grand prix de Rome in medal engraving for his work “La Légende et l’Histoire”. He worked as a sculptor, medallist, founder and goldsmith. De Jaeger died in Paris on May 19 1992.

1966, France. PAUL FABER – 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF ACIÉRIES DE CHAMPAGNIOLE. By Pierre Turin. Bronze 59mm. $90.

Pierre Turin was born in Sucy-en-Brie (Val-de-Marne) on 3 August, 1891. He trained as a steel engraver and became a student at the École Nationale Supèrieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He studied medal engraving under Henri Auguste Jules Patey and Fréderic-Charles Victor de Vernon. He participated several times in the competition for the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving, receiving a deuxième second Grand Prix in 1914, a premier second Grand Prix in 1919 and finally winning the competition in 1920. He had a distinguished career as a medalist and designer of coins.  He is noted for his many works with a bold, Art Deco style, in particular the prize medal from the 1925 Exposition Internationale Des Arts Decoratifs Et Industriels Moderns in Paris. In 1938 he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur. Turin died on July 25, 1968 in Sucy-en-Brie, where he had been born. Louis Oscar Roty was born at Paris on June 11, 1846. He initially studied painting at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts under Lecoq and Boisbaudran. It is reported that he lost the money for a paint box and subsequently enrolled in a life-drawing class and thence into sculpting. This trajectory would eventually lead to his career as the most celebrated medallist of his time. Along the way, he studied in the atelier of the statuary Augustin Dumont and under Ponscarme, Chapu and Chaplain. He won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1875. Roty spent three years in Rome, where he modeled a number of waxes. In 1888 he was elected to the Acad?mie des Beaux-Arts. He took the grand prize at the International Exposition in 1889. Roty was a commander of the L?gion d?Honneur. He was responsible for reintroducing the plaquette, an art form that had been neglected since the Renaissance. His ?Semeuse? (sower) was widely used on French coins and stamps. He died in Paris on March 23, 1911.

Raymond Delamarre was born in Paris on June 8, 1890. He studied under his father, an engraver, and under Jules Coutan at l’École des beaux-arts de Paris. He was also a student of Rodin. He was mobilized in World War I and was wounded and captured in 1914. He returned to Paris following the war and won the first Grand Prize de Rome for Sculpture in 1919. He exhibited at the international expositions of 1925, 1931 and 1937. Delamarre is noted for large scale sculptures, and a bas-relief, Les Arts et Monuments Régionau on the liner ‘Normandie.”   He created a large body of medals and plaquettes.
