“Our streets abound with objects which have undergone processes of deformation that emulate the process of striking a medal. In this respect, they suggest themselves from the gutter, reemerging as medallic forms and images. As a discarded object accumulates the marks of deformation, a transition occurs. Stripped of its utility, like a medal it stands as an aesthetically valid object in its own right but again like a medal, it equally serves as a memorial to the past.”

Jane McAdam Freud was born in London on February 28, 1958. She was the daughter of artist Lucien Freud and great-granddaughter of Sigmund Freud. She is noted for her conceptual sculpture. She held her first solo show, aged 18, under the curatorship of her teachers at Putney Art School. She also studied at the Wimbledon College of Art, the Central School of Art and Design and the Royal College of Art. Additionally, she spent some time studying mosaics in Ravenna. In 1986 she won the British Art Medal Scholarship in Rome where she studied sculpture at the Academia de Belle Arti de Roma and at the Scuola d’Arte della Medaglia in Rome. McAdam Freud held several exhibitions of her medallic works, which are represented in museums in the United Kingdom, United States, Greece and Germany. She died on August 9, 2022.

Jacques Wiener, whose given name was Jacob, was born on March 2, 1815, at Hoerstgen (Rhine Province) to Hungarian parents. He seems to have started using Jacques as his name when he moved to Belgium. At the age of 13 he went to live with his uncle Baruth, an artist, and studied drawing, modelling and engraving. In 1835 he moved to Paris to perfect his skills and in 1839 moved to Brussels, where he established himself as an engraver. He became a naturalized Belgian in 1845. He created an extensive body of medals and is best known for his finely detailed architectural medals, especially his series of Most Remarkable Edifices. He is also widely known for engraving the first Belgian postage stamp. Wiener died in Brussels in 1899.

Raoul B?nard was born on 30 September 1881. He studied under the sculptor Coutan and the medallists Chaplain and Vernon. In 1911 he won the Prix de Rome for medal engraving and, in 1922, a silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais, followed by a gold medal two years later. He was later made a Chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur. B?nard died in 1961.

Sorry, SOLD (June, 2023)———— Louis Muller was born on February 22 1902 at V?nissieux into a family of modest means. He started to work with metals at the age of 13. He was apprenticed to various jewelers and silversmiths in Lyon. After completing his national service in 1923 he entered the atelier of sculptor Jean-Baptiste Larriv? at the ?cole des Beaux-Arts de Lyon. He later moved to Paris where he studied under Sculpture under Henri Bouchard and medal engraving under Henry Dropsy and Aguste Patey. Muller also studied at the private academy established by Andr? Lavrillier. In 1929 he won the second prix de Rome in medal engraving and in 1932 won the premier prix de Rome. Muller worked for the Monnaie de Paris and for various private makers of medals. He died at Antony in 1957.
