France. VICTOR HUGO. Uniface cast bronze 98mm (probably later) by David D?Angers. $200. Sorry, SOLD (May, 2020) ———— Pierre-Jean David, known as David d?Angers, was born at Angers on March 12 1788. His father was a sculptor. David studied under Marchand and Jean-Jacques Delusse at l??cole centrale d?Angers between 1806 and 1807. In 1811 he won the Grand Prix de Rome for a bas relief of ?Mort d??paminondas.? After his stay in Rome, he traveled through France to London, where he met Flaxman and worked with him on a monument to the Duke of Wellington. He returned to France in 1818 He quickly established his reputation and was made a chevalier de la L?gion d’honneur in 1825 and was elected as a member of l?Institut de France in the following year. He served as a professor at l??cole des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He is celebrated for many sculptures, but especially for his extensive series of portrait medallions. David died in Paris on January 6 1856,

HENRY IV, 1399-1413. By Jean Dassier. Bronze 41mm. Obv: Bust, facing left, in a doublet and wearing a crown and a drape on his head. Leg: HENRICUS . V . D . G . ANG . FR . ET . HIB . REX. (Henry V, by the grace of God, king of England, France and Ireland). Rev: A sepulcharal monument, on which Death reclines amid military trophies. A bas-relief on the base depicts Prince John of Lancaster ordering the rebel chiefs to be arrested. Inscription on the pedestal of the monument: NATUS. 1366. CORONAT. 1399. MORT 1413. (Born 1366, crowned 1399, died 1413). From Dassier’s series of medals of the Kings and Queens of England, first published in 1731 and restruck by Sir Edward Thomason circa 1820. He studied in England, Germany and at l??cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He worked as a sculptor, painter and medallist. Spicer-Simpson travelled extensively and lived for a time in America. He is noted in particular for his cast portrait medallions, taken from life. He died 1960

France. SHEEP DOG. By Georges Contaux (1891-1984). Bronze 84mm. $125. Sorry, SOLD (August, 2019) – – – – – Georges Contaux was born in Paris. He entered the ?cole Boulle, where he studied sculpture and engraving. He joined the 26?me R?giment d?artillerie de campagne at Chartres in 1911. Contaux was wounded during World War I and had two fingers amputated. In 1921 he received an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais. From 1922 to 1923 he worked for the engraver Pierre Lasserre (1870-1943). He then established himself at Vigneux-sur-Seine, where he remained, for the rest of his life, working as a sculptor and medallist. We was a prolific medalist producing about twenty-five hundred medals over the span of fifty years from 1930 to 1980. About fifteen hundred of his medals were religious and another eight hundred related to sports.

France. SATYR. By Pierre Turin (1891-1968. Grand Prix de Rome in 1920). Octagonal cast bronze 84mm x 84mm. $600. Sorry, SOLD (October, 2020) ———— Pierre Turin was born in Sucy-en-Brie (Val-de-Marne) on 3 August 1891. He trained as a steel engraver and became a student at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He studied medal engraving under Henri Auguste Jules Patey and Fr?deric-Charles Victor de Vernon. He participated several times in the competition for the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving, receiving a deuxi?me second Grand Prix in 1914, a premier second Grand Prix in 1919 and finally winning the competition in 1920. He had a distinguished career as a medalist and designer of coins. He is noted for his many works with a bold, Art Deco style, in particular the prize medal from the 1925 Exposition Internationale Des Arts Decoratifs Et Industriels Moderns in Paris. In 1938 he was made a Chevalier of the L?gion d?Honneur. Turin died in 1968.
