Jean-Baptiste Daniel-Dupuis (1848-1899), French painter, sculptor and medallist entered l’École Nationale Supérieur des Beaux-Arts at the age of seventeen. In 1868 he won the second Prix de Rome for medal engraving and the first Grand Prix de Rome in 1872. He exhibited regularly at the Salon. In 1898 he was made an officer of the Légion d’Honneur. Daniel-Dupuis died tragically in 1899, when he was shot in his sleep by his wife, who had a history of mental illness. His wife then turned the gun on herself and committed suicide.  Daniel-Dupuis created an extensive oeuvre of medallic works.

France, insurance. LA POPULAIRE – CIE. FRANÇAISE D’ASSURANCES SUR LA VIE. By Raymond Delamarre (1890-1986). Bronze 57mm. Cased. $45. Sorry, SOLD (August, 2022)

Raymond Delamarre was born in Paris on June 8, 1890. He studied under his father, an engraver, and under Jules Coutan at l’École des beaux-arts de Paris. He was also a student of Rodin. He was mobilized in World War I and was wounded and captured in 1914. He returned to Paris following the war and won the first Grand Prize de Rome for Sculpture in 1919. He exhibited at the international expositions of 1925, 1931 and 1937. Delamarre is noted for large scale sculptures, and a bas-relief, Les Arts et Monuments Régionau on the liner ‘Normandie.”   He created a large body of medals and plaquettes. Delamarre died on February 28, 1986. Delamarre’s works, including his medals are discussed and illustrated in “Raymond Delamarre, Sculpteur et Médailler” By Claire Maingon. Rennes, 1924

He was a pupil of S?bastien Cornu, Fran?ois Th?odore Devaulx and Alexandre Falgui?re. He exhibited at the Salon and won a medal in 1879. He won a gold medal at the Universal Exposition of 1900. Peter worked in various media, but specialized in sculpture and medallic art. As a medallist, Peter is best known for his depictions of animals. He became professor of sculptur at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieur des Beaux-Arts in 1901 and was made a chevalier of the L?gion d’Honneur. Peter died on March 20 1918.

1909, France. SHEEP -AGRICULTURAL AWARD. By Henri Dubois. Bronze 45mm. $65. Sorry, SOLD (August, 2024) ———– Henri Alfred Auguste Dubois, was the son of noted sculptor and medallist, Alph?e Dubois and grandson of Eug?ne Dubois. He was born in Rome on August 21 1859 while his father was studying at the French Academy in Rome as a winner of the Prix de Rome. He studied under his father, Chapu and Falgui?re. He won the second Grand Prix de Rome in 1878 and in 1883 became a Soci?taire des Artiste Fran?ais. In 1900 he won a silver medal at the Universal Exposition. In 1903 he was made a Chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur. Dubois died in December of 1943.

France. GALLIA. By Pierre-Alexandre Morlon (1878-1951). Bronze 41mm. $50. Sorry, SOLD (November, 2023) ———- Pierre-Alexandre Morlon (1878-1951) was born at M?con. He initially worked under his father, a marble worker, but later moved to Paris, where he studied under the sculptors Alexandre Falgui?re and Claude Antoine Merci?. He became a regular exhibitor at the Salon of the Soci?t? des Artistes Fran?ais. He produced several war memorials following World War I and is noted, among medal collectors, for his medals related to World War I. Morlon designed an effigy of Marianne in a Phrygian cap, which was used on the fifty centime, one franc and two-franc coins from 1931 until 1959. He also designed coins for Uruguay. He was made a Chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur in 1927. He died at Houdan on February 24, 1951.

Sorry, SOLD ——— Raoul B?nard was born on 30 September 1881. He studied under the sculptor Coutan and the medallists Chaplain and Vernon. In 1911 he won the Prix de Rome for medal engraving and, in 1922, a silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais, followed by a gold medal two years later. He was later made a Chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur. B?nard died in 1961.

1978, France. GEORGE CRUIKSHANK, Caricaturist.By Ronald Searle. Plated-copper 95mm. No. 22 of an edition of 100 published by Club Français de la Médaille. $125. Sorry, SOLD (March, 2024)

Ronald William Fordham Searle was born in Cambridge on March 3, 1920. He is best known as a satirical cartoonist and illustrator, and for being the creator of St. Trinian’s School. He started creating medals long after he had established his reputation. Searle started drawing at the age of five and left school at the age of 15. He trained at Cambridge College of Arts and Technology (now Anglia Ruskin University). In 1939 he enlisted in the army. In 1942 he was stationed in Singapore. He fought in Malaya and was taken prisoner. Searle was moved to the Kwai Jungle, where he worked on the “Death Railway.” He suffered considerably during his imprisonment, contracting beri-beri and malaria, and was subjected to beatings. His weight dropped to under 90 pounds. During his captivity he made drawings that documented the atrocities he observed. He kept them hidden. About 300 survived the war. They are documented in a book published in 1986. The originals are in the collection of the Imperial War Museum. After the War, Searle served as a courtroom artist at the Nuremberg trials. During the 1950s he produced an extraordinary amount of work, which was published in many leading publications, including Punch and the New Yorker. In 1961 he moved to Paris. He died on December 30, 2011 in Provence.

Henry Dropsy was born in Paris on January 21, 1885, into a family of sculptors.  He learned his craft under his father Jean-Baptiste Émile Dropsy. He later studied at l’École Supérieure des Beaux Arts. He was a professor of medal engraving at the school for many years. Dropsy became a member of the Institut in 1942 and a member of the Commission Administrative and of the Commission du Dictionaire. He created many medals. A large collection of his work is held at the Monnaie de Paris, which put on a special exhibition of his medals in 1964, the catalogue for which remains a standard reference. His earliest works are in the art nouveau style. His style evolved considerably over his long career. Dropsy died at Veneux-Les-Sablon on November 2, 1969.

Andr? Lavrillier was born in 1885. He studied under his father, an engraver, and under Chaplain and Bourdelle. He won the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1914. He was later made a Chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur. Besides medals, he designed a number of coins. Lavrillier died in 1958
