France. LE VENT (The Wind). By Camille Lef?vre. Published by la Soci?t? Fran?aise des Amis de la M?daille. Bronze 68mm. Maier 35. $1,250. Sorry, SOLD (May, 2023) ——- Camille Lef?vre (also Lef?bvre) was born at Issy-sur-Seine on December 31, 1853. He began his career as an apprentice in wood sculpting. He then entered the ?cole des Arts Decoratifs followed by the ?cole des Beaux Arts. In 1878 he won the second Grand Prix de Rome in sculpture. He began exhibiting in the Salon in the following year, where he won a third class medal in 1884. He was a founding member of the Soci?t? Nationale des Beaux Arts. Lef?vre died in Paris on May 23, 1933. After his death, his widow bequeathed his collection and works from his studio to the museums of Belfort.

1935, France. THE LION OF BELFORT – CENTENNARY OF CAISSE D??PARGNE DE BELFORT (Savings Bank). After Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904). Bronze plaquette 68mm x 49mm. $100. Sorry, SOLD (April, 2020) ———– Fr?d?ric Auguste Bartholdi was born on August 2nd, 1834 at Colmar. His father died when Bartholdi was only two. His mother moved to Paris where she enrolled him in Le Lyc?e Louis-le-Grand and as a student in the workshops of the sculptor Antoine ?tex and the painter Ary Scheffer. In 1855 and 1856 he traveled in Egypt, where he was inspired by the monumental sculptures. During the Franco-German War of 1870, he served as aide-de-camp to General Giuseppe Garibaldi. His best known work is The Statue of Liberty (La Libert? ?clairant le Monde ? Liberty Enlightening the World). His other best known work is the Lion of Belfort. Bartholdi died in Paris on October 4, 1904.

1925, France. EXPOSITION INTERNATIONALE DES ARTS DECORATIFS ET INDUSTRIELS MODERNS, PARIS. By Pierre Turin. Octagonal Silver 59mm. Obv: A semi-nude female, seated on a cloud, supporting a basket of flowers on her shoulder and dropping flowers with her other hand. Rev: A tablet set against flowers. Maier 322. Pierre Turin was born in Sucy-en-Brie (Val-de-Marne) on 3 August, 1891. He trained as a steel engraver and became a student at the École Nationale Supèrieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He studied medal engraving under Henri Auguste Jules Patey and Fréderic-Charles Victor de Vernon. He participated several times in the competition for the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving, receiving a deuxième second Grand Prix in 1914, a premier second Grand Prix in 1919 and finally winning the competition in 1920. He had a distinguished career as a medalist and designer of coins.  He is noted for his many works with a bold, Art Deco style, in particular the prize medal from the 1925 Exposition Internationale Des Arts Decoratifs Et Industriels Moderns in Paris. In 1938 he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur. Turin died on July 25, 1968 in Sucy-en-Brie, where he had been born.

France. LA SOCI?T? DES AMIS DE LA M?DAILLE FRAN?AISE. By Alexandre Charpentier for the Soci?t? des Amis de la M?daille Fran?aise. Bronze 71mm x 65mm. Maier 11. $1,000. Sorry, SOLD (October, 2021) ———- Alexandre-Louis-Marie Charpentier, medalist, sculptor and craftsman was born in Paris in 1856. He initially trained as a jeweler, then worked under a medallist. This led him to entering L??cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts, where he studied medal engraving from 1871 ? 1876 in the studio of Hubert Ponscarme. Charpentier first exhibited at the Salon in 1877 with a portrait medallion of his mother and in 1879 exhibited ?Tireur d?Arc,? a bas-relief, which was purchased by Alexandre Dumas. He with Ponscarme, Louis-Oscar Roty and others was responsible for the resurgence of medallic art in France in the late 19th century. Charpentier died at Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1909.

He studied at the ?cole des Beaux Arts in Lyon and later moved to Paris, where he studied under Coutan and Barrias. He became a member of the Soci?t? des Artistes Fran?ais. He received an honorable mention in 1903 and a third prize medal in 1907. Chorel died at Villeurbanne on June 4 1946.
