Jacques Wiener, whose given name was Jacob, was born on March 2, 1815, at Hoerstgen (Rhine Province) to Hungarian parents. He seems to have started using Jacques as his name when he moved to Belgium. At the age of 13 he went to live with his uncle Baruth, an artist, and studied drawing, modelling and engraving. In 1835 he moved to Paris to perfect his skills and in 1839 moved to Brussels, where he established himself as an engraver. He became a naturalized Belgian in 1845. He created an extensive body of medals and is best known for his finely detailed architectural medals, especially his series of Most Remarkable Edifices. He is also widely known for engraving the first Belgian postage stamp. Wiener died in Brussels in 1899.

1935, France. SYNDICAT PROFESSIONNEL DES PRODUCTEURS ET DISTRIBUTEURS ?LECTRIQUE. By Georges Contaux (1891-1984). Bronze 50mm. Cased. $90. Sorry, SOLD (April, 2021) ———- Georges Contaux was born in Paris. He entered the ?cole Boulle, where he studied sculpture and engraving. He joined the 26?me R?giment d?artillerie de campagne at Chartres in 1911. Contaux was wounded during World War I and had two fingers amputated. In 1921 he received an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais. From 1922 to 1923 he worked for the engraver Pierre Lasserre (1870-1943). He then established himself at Vigneux-sur-Seine, where he remained, for the rest of his life, working as a sculptor and medallist. We was a prolific medallist producing about twenty-five hundred medals over the span of fifty years from 1930 to 1980. About fifteen hundred of his medals were religious and another eight hundred related to sports.

Louis Desvignes, sculptor and medallist,was born on November 14 1877 at Creusot (Sa?ne-et-Loire), He was a student of Raoul. Verlet, Paul Auban and Henri Dubois at l’?cole des Beaux-Arts de Paris . He was a soci?taire du Salon des Artistes Fran?ais and won a gold medal in 1932. Desvignes died in Paris on June 22, 1934.

1914-15, Belgium. LA CANTINE DU SOLDAT PRISONNIER. By Godefoid Devresse. Bronze 55mm. $95. Sorry, SOLD (July, 2022) ———- Godefroid Devreese was one of Belgium’s most prolific medallists. He was born at Courtrai in 1861. He studied sculpture under his father and later at the Academy of Brussels. In 1885 he won the second Grand Prix de Rome. In 1889 he won the first Grand Prix for sculpture at the Academy of Brussels and a gold medal at the International Exposition in Cologne. A brief biography and a complete catalogue of his medallic works is provided in GODEFROID DEVRESE 1861-1941 by Poels, Vandamme and Van Dreiessche.

France. ST. JOAN OF ARC. By Oscar Roty (1846-1911. Grand Prix de Rome, 1875). Silver (stamped 1ARGENT) 45mm. $395. Sorry, SOLD (October, 2021) ———- Louis Oscar Roty was born at Paris on June 11, 1846. He initially studied painting at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts under Lecoq and Boisbaudran. It is reported that he lost the money for a paint box and subsequently enrolled in a life-drawing class and thence into sculpting. This trajectory would eventually lead to his career as the most celebrated medallist of his time. Along the way, he studied in the atelier of the statuary Augustin Dumont and under Ponscarme, Chapu and Chaplain. He won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1875. Roty spent three years in Rome, where he modeled a number of waxes. In 1888 he was elected to the Acad?mie des Beaux-Arts. He took the grand prize at the International Exposition in 1889. Roty was a commander of the L?gion d?Honneur. He was responsible for reintroducing the plaquette, an art form that had been neglected since the Renaissance. His ?Semeuse? (sower) was widely used on French coins and stamps. He died in Paris on March 23, 1911.
