1969, Great Britain. 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE STRATFORD JUBILEE. By Paul Vincze. Bronze 57mm. $60. Sorry, SOLD (April, 2023).

Paul Vincze (1907-1994), the son of a Jewish father and Roman Catholic mother was born in Hungary. He studied at the High School of Arts and Crafts in Budapest and later in the studio of E. Telcs. In 1935 he won a scholarship to study in Rome. In 1937 he moved to England and eventually became a British citizen. He worked out of a studio in Chelsea, but later moved to the south of France, where he died. He is noted for an extensive body of medals.

France. MARCEL DAMMANN, medallist and sculptor. By João Da Silva (1880-1960). Bronze 59mm. $75. Sorry, SOLD

João Da Silva was born in Lisbon on December 1 1880. He studied in France under Jules Clément Chaplain. He exhibited in Paris until 1926 and won an honorable mention at the Universal Exposition in 1900. He gained a reputation as a sculptor of animals and was acclaimed in Portugal, Brazil and France. He was responsible for revitalizing medallic art in Portugal. Da Silva died in 1960.

Paul-Marcel Dammann, sculptor and medallist was born on June 13, 1885, at Montgerm. He studied under Chaplain. In 1908 he won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving. In 1928 he won a medal of honor at the Salon and was made a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in the following year. He designed a number of coins for foreign governments. Dammann died in 1939.

Sorry SOLD (June, 2021). —– Edmond Henri Becker was born in Paris on July 20 1871. He studied under Valton. He worked as a medallist, sculptor and goldsmith, exhibiting at the Salons des Artistes Fran?ais and des Arts D?coratifs from 1892 until 1951. He initially created works in the art nouveau style and later in the art deco style. Many of his works have a religious theme. Becker died, aged 100, at Nogent-sur-Marne on November 2 1971.

1954, Dakar, Senegal. COMPAGNIE DES EAUX ET ÉLÉCRICITÉ DE L’OUEST AFRICAIN. By Raymond Delamarre. Bronze 68mm. $120. Sorry, SOLD (March, 2023)

Raymond Delamarre was born in Paris on June 8, 1890. He studied under his father, an engraver, and under Jules Coutan at l’École des beaux-arts de Paris. He was also a student of Rodin. He was mobilized in World War I and was wounded and captured in 1914. He returned to Paris following the war and won the first Grand Prize de Rome for Sculpture in 1919. He exhibited at the international expositions of 1925, 1931 and 1937. Delamarre is noted for large scale sculptures, and a bas-relief, Les Arts et Monuments Régionau on the liner ‘Normandie.”   He created a large body of medals and plaquettes. Delamarre died on February 28, 1986. Delamarre’s works, including his medals are discussed and illustrated in RAYMOND DELAMARRE, Sculpteur et Médailleur By Claire Maingon. Rennes, 1924

1948, France. CENTENARY OF LA SOCIÉTÉ DES INGENIEURS CIVILS DE FRANCE. By Jean Vernon (1897-1975). Bronze 68mm. $90. Sorry, SOLD (December, 2022)

Jean Émile Louis de Vernon (known as Jean Vernon) was the son of medallist and sculptor Frédéric-Charles Victor de Vernon. He was born in Paris on April 1, 1897. Vernon studied at the École  des Arts Décoratifs and at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, under Jules Coutan and Hippolyte Jules Lefèbvre. He first exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1922 and won a silver medal in 1924 and a gold medal in 1936. Vernon worked primarily as a sculptor, but created medals, including his famous series of medals depicting scenes from Jean de la Fontaine’s Fables. He died in Paris on September 9, 1975.

Palembang was the capital of Srivijaya, a kingdom that ruled much of the western Indonesian Archipelago, controlled the Strait of Malacca, and had fallen under British influence. An expedition launched by the Dutch succeeded in capturing the pro-British Sultan Najamuddin and garrisoning the city.

Richard Fath was born in 1900. He was a French sculptor who worked in various media including bronze, terracotta, plaster, carved wood and marble. He was a student of Jean Boucher and exhibited at the Salon beginning in 1925. He is noted in particular for his sculptures of animals, especially dogs. He also created some medallic works including a few with a strong art deco style. Fath died in 1952.
