(1853) Portugal. MONASTERY OF BATALHA. By Jacques Wiener. Bronze 60mm. Hoydonck 103, Reinecke 55, Ross M119. $250. Reserved. ———— Jacques Wiener, whose given name was Jacob, was born on March 2, 1815, at Hoerstgen (Rhine Province) to Hungarian parents. He seems to have started using Jacques as his name when he moved to Belgium. At the age of 13 he went to live with his uncle Baruth, an artist, and studied drawing, modelling and engraving. In 1835 he moved to Paris to perfect his skills and in 1839 moved to Brussels, where he established himself as an engraver. He became a naturalized Belgian in 1845. He created an extensive body of medals and is best known for his finely detailed architectural medals, especially his series of Most Remarkable Edifices. He is also widely known for engraving the first Belgian postage stamp. Wiener died in Brussels in 1899.

Julien-Prosper Legastelois (1885?1931) was born in Paris. He studied under the sculptor Carltier and medal engraving under Levasseur, Roty, and Tonnelier. He won various distinctions during the course of his career and was made a Chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur.

He began exhibiting at the Salon in 1889 and becase a Soci?taire des Artistes Fran?ais in 1907. He became a Chevalier of the L?gion d?Honneur in 1933. Rasumny died in 1940.

?Plimmer?s? or ?Noah?s? Ark was a building constructed by John Plimmer out of the hulk of a ship the ?Inconstant,? which was wrecked off Wellington. In its new incarnation, it served as a wharf and warehouse. It was nicknamed for its appearance to an Ark. A Bank of New Zealand Building was eventually constructed on the site. Some timbers were salvaged and made into a chair for the bank?s director.

Chaplain was born at Mortagne in 1839. He entered the Ecole nationale superieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1857. He studied under the Sculptor Jouffroy and Eugene-Andre Oudine, the medallist. He won the first prize at the Concours de Rome in 1862. He studied in Italy from 1864 to? 1868. He was elected to the Academie des Beaux-Arts in 1881 and became an officer of the Legion d’Honneur in 1888. He died in 1909.?
