Jules-Cl?ment Chaplain was born at Mortagne in 1839. He entered the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1857. He studied under the sculptor, Jouffroy, and Eugene-Andr? Oudin?, the medallist. He won the first prize at the Concours de Rome in 1862. He studied in Italy from 1864 to? 1868. He was elected to the Acad?mie des Beaux-Arts in 1881 and became an officer of the L?gion d’Honneur in 1888. He died in 1909.

Lucien Bazor was born in 1889. He studied under Auguste Patey at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux Arts. He won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1923. He succeeded Patey in the post of Engraver General at the Paris Mint, a post he held until 1958. Bazor died in 1974.

1931, France. THE MAIDEN VOYAGE OF THE LINER ‘GEORGES PHILIPPAR.’ By Auguste Maillard. AE 68mm. Obv: Head of Georges Philippar facing left. Rev: A three-quarters view of the ‘Georges Philippar.’ Cased. Extremely fine. $225. Sorry, SOLD
The ‘Georges Philippar’ set out on its maiden voyage from Marseille on February 26, 1932. On its return journey a fire broke out and spread rapidly. Fifty-four lives were lost and 704 were rescued.
Auguste Maillard, sculptor and medallist was born in 1866. He studied under Dalou, Gaudez and Falgui?re. He won a second class medal at the Salon of 1898 and a third class medal at the Universal Exposition in 1900. Maillard died in 1944.
