France. UNION SYNDICATS DE LA TEINTURE DE L’IMPRESSION ET DE L’APPRET DE LYON ET DE LA REGION. By Louis Muller. Bronze 80mmm. $100. Sorry, SOLD (August, 2024)

Louis Muller was born on February 22 1902 at Vénissieux into a family of modest means. He started to work with metals at the age of 13. He was apprenticed to various jewelers and silversmiths in Lyon. After completing his national service in 1923 he entered the atelier of sculptor Jean-Baptiste Larrivé at the École des Beaux-Arts de Lyon. He later moved to Paris where he studied under Sculpture under Henri Bouchard and medal engraving under Henry Dropsy and Aguste Patey. Muller also studied at the private academy established by André Lavrillier. In 1929 he won the second prix de Rome in medal engraving and in 1932 won the premier prix de Rome. Muller worked for the Monnaie de Paris and for various private makers of medals. He died at Antony in 1957.

This medal is from a series of medals created by Mascaux, related to various sporting events, for the Art exhibition held at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. He departed from the traditional representation of the events and selected various animals to capture the essence of each sport. His designs are discussed in an article in the February 1924 issue of Art et Décoration.

Léon-Claude Mascaux was born in Saint-Germain-en-Lay (Yvelines) on June 13 1882,  He studied under the sculptors Landowski and Bouchard. He first exhibited at the Salon of the Société des Beaux Arts in 1921. In 1924 he won a medal in the artistic comptetion of the Olympic Games. In the following year he won a Grand Prix at the Exposition des Arts Déoratifs et Industriels Moderns for a series seven sports-themed medals. Unlike his contemporaries, he eschewed the reducing machine and cut his models directly into the plaster in the actual size of his intended medals. His medals typically reflect a strong Art Deco style. Mascaux died at Fontainebleau on March 8 1965.

France. THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE MINES AT LENS. By Oscar Roty and Hippolyte Lef?bvre. Silvered-bronze plaquette 47mm x 69mm. Cased. $175. Sorry, SOLD (May, 2023). ———— Louis Oscar Roty was born at Paris on June 11, 1846. He initially studied painting at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts under Lecoq and Boisbaudran. It is reported that he lost the money for a paint box and subsequently enrolled in a life-drawing class and thence into sculpting. This trajectory would eventually lead to his career as the most celebrated medallist of his time. Along the way, he studied in the atelier of the statuary Augustin Dumont and under Ponscarme, Chapu and Chaplain. He won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1875. Roty spent three years in Rome, where he modeled a number of waxes. In 1888 he was elected to the Acad?mie des Beaux-Arts. He took the grand prize at the International Exposition in 1889. Roty was a commander of the L?gion d?Honneur. He was responsible for reintroducing the plaquette, an art form that had been neglected since the Renaissance. His ?Semeuse? (sower) was widely used on French coins and stamps. He died in Paris on March 23, 1911. ———– Hippolyte Lef?bvre, sculptor and medallist was born in Lille.
