1936, France. HENRI-MARCEL MAGNE. By Pierre Turin. AE 68mm. Obv: Head of Henri-Marcel Magne facing right. Rev: Turin?s medal from the 1925 Exposition, inscription. Slight ege bump on the obverse at “1 o’clock.” $125. Sorry, SOLD (March, 2022) ——–Pierre Turin was born in 1891. He was a student at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He studied under Henri Auguste Jules Patey and Fr?deric-Charles Victor de Vernon. In 1920 he won the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving. Turin died in 1968. He is noted for the strong art deco style of many of his medals.

Rev: A monument ornament with a bas-relief representing the king as Hercules, seated and attended by Justice, Prudence and Wealth. Bois Durci a darkwood-like material that is made from finely ground wood mixed with abinder, such as egg or blood albumen. ?It waspatented, in Paris in 1855, by Lepage and wasused to make various decorative items, including medallions, at twofactories in France, until about 1927. Objectsmade from bois durci were created in steel molds and compressedwhilst being heated by steam.

Rev: Rays radiated from a triangle above an inscription. $160 ?? Sorry, SOLD ? ? Raoul B?nard was born in 1881. He studied under Chaplain. In 1911 he won the Prix de Rome and. in 1922, a silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais, followed by a gold medal two years later. He was made a Chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur. Benard died in 1961.

The original commission for this medal was given to Charles Frederick Carter, but his progress on the medal was slow. The commission was thus transferred to George Gammon Adams.

1939, France. THE MAIDEN VOYAGE OF THE PAQUEBOT PASTEUR. By Fran?ois Bazin. Bronze 68mm. Obv: Head of Louis Pasteur facing left; to the the left: a shepherd and sheep and to the right: a mother and child. Rev: The “Pasteur” at sea. Slightly uneven patina and a couple of slight edge bumps. $125. Sorry, SOLD (July, 2023) ——— Fran?ois Victor Johann?s Bazin was born in Paris on October 31 1897 into a family of engravers. He spent some of his childhood in Chile, where his father was working. He returned to Paris in 1913 where he studied at l’?cole des arts d?coratifs et ? l??cole nationale sup?rieure des beaux-arts de Paris where he was a student of ?douard Navellier, Denys Puech and Jean-Antoine Injalbert. He was called to service in World War I in 1916. Following the war he was hired to design radiator decorations for cars. Over the course of his career he received many awards and he spent time abroad at the Ville de Medici in Rome, in Egypt, Greece and Madagascar. Bazin died in 1956.
