Paul-Marcel Dammann, sculptor and medallist, was born on June 13, 1885, at Montgerm. He studied under Chaplain. In 1908 he won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving. In 1928 he won a medal of honor at the Salon and was made a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in the following year. He designed a number of coins for foreign governments. Dammann died in 1939.

Georges Guiraud was born at Toulouse on August 5 1901. He was the son of Albert Guiraud, who was a painter and illuminator of documents. Guiraud studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Toulouse and later at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He worked in the workshop of Jean Boucher. Guiraud won the First Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1926. He died at Saint-Hilaire-au-Temple (Marne) on May 12 1989.

Henry Dropsy was born in Paris on January 21, 1885, into a family of sculptors. He learned his craft under his father Jean-Baptiste Émile Dropsy. He later studied at l’École Supérieure des Beaux Arts. He was a professor of medal engraving at the school for many years. Dropsy became a member of the Institut in 1942 and a member of the Commission Administrative and of the Commission du Dictionaire. He created many medals. A large collection of his work is held at the Monnaie de Paris, which put on a special exhibition of his medals in 1964, the catalogue for which remains a standard reference. His earliest works are in the art nouveau style. His style evolved considerably over his long career. Dropsy died at Veneux-Les-Sablon on November 2, 1969.

Samuel Grün, painter, sculptor, engraver and medalist was born on February 19 1869 in Tallin, Estonia, the son of Maurice Grün, a painter. He worked in London and Paris. Grün exhibited at the Société des Artistes Français and at the Salon of the Royal Academy in London. The exact date of his death is unknown, probably some time after the 1930s.

Sorry, SOLD (March, 2024) ———— Louis Oscar Roty was born at Paris on June 11, 1846. He initially studied painting at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts under Lecoq and Boisbaudran. It is reported that he lost the money for a paint box and subsequently enrolled in a life-drawing class and thence into sculpting. This trajectory would eventually lead to his career as the most celebrated medallist of his time. Along the way, he studied in the atelier of the statuary Augustin Dumont and under Ponscarme, Chapu and Chaplain. He won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1875. Roty spent three years in Rome, where he modeled a number of waxes. In 1888 he was elected to the Acad?mie des Beaux-Arts. He took the grand prize at the International Exposition in 1889. Roty was a commander of the L?gion d?Honneur. He was responsible for reintroducing the plaquette, an art form that had been neglected since the Renaissance. His ?Semeuse? (sower) was widely used on French coins and stamps. He died in Paris on March 23, 1911.
