France. ACADEMIE DE MEDICINE. By Henri Auguste Jules Patey (1855-1930, Grand Prix de Rome in 1881). Bronze 59mm. $100. ————— Henri Auguste Jules Patey was born in Paris on September 1855. He entered the ?cole des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1873, where he studied sculpture under Henri Chapu and Fran?ois Jouffroy, followed by medal engraving under Jules-Cl?ment Chaplain. He first exhibited at the Salon in 1877. In 1881 he won the premier grand prix de Rome in medal engraving. He became a soci?taire of the Soci?t? des Artistes Fran?ais in 1885. He won various medals, including a bronze medal that Universal Exposition of 1889 and a gold medal at the Universal Exposition of 1900. In 1896 he succeeded Jean Lagrange as the Graveur g?n?ral des monnaies at the Paris Mint, a post he held until 1930. In 1898 he was made a chevalier de la L?gion d’honneur and became a member of the Acad?mie des beaux-arts in 1913. Patey died in Paris on May 17 1930.

He studied under the sculptor Coutan and the medallists Chaplain and Vernon. In 1911 he won the Prix de Rome for medal engraving and, in 1922, a silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais, followed by a gold medal two years later. He was later made a Chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur. B?nard died in 1961.

Maurice Delannoy was born on March 11, 1885, in Paris.  He studied at the École Germain Pilon under Charles Valton and Jules Édouard Roiné. He became a professor of drawing and worked as a medallisst and sculptor. He designed coins for Morocco, Monaco and Lebanon, and a considerable number of medals. Delannoy was made a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in 1947. He died in Paris on April 26, 1972.

Edmond Henri Becker was born in Paris on July 20, 1871. He studied under Valton. He worked as a medallist, sculptor and goldsmith, exhibiting at the Salons des Artistes Fran?ais and des Arts D?coratifs from 1892 until 1951. He initially created works in the art nouveau style and later in the art deco style. Many of his works have a religious theme. Becker died, aged 100, at Nogent-sur-Marne on November 2, 1971.

Marcel Renard sculptor and medallist was born at Lyon in 1892. He studied at the ?cole des Beaux-Art de Lyon and then at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He spent time in the ateliers of Boucher and Patey. In 1923 he won the Premier Second Prix de Rome and a gold medal at the Salon des Artistes D?corateurs. Renard died in 1974

France. Viticulture, viniculture. LE VIN. By Georges Contaux. Silvered-bronze 58mm. Some rubbing on the tip of the nose on the obverse. $125.

Georges Contaux was born on September 22, 1891 in Paris. He entered the ?cole Boulle, where he studied sculpture and engraving. He joined the 26?me R?giment d?artillerie de campagne at Chartres in 1911. Contaux was wounded during World War I and had two fingers amputated. In 1921 he received an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais. From 1922 to 1923 he worked for the engraver Pierre Lasserre (1870-1943). He then established himself at Vigneux-sur-Seine, where he remained, for the rest of his life, working as a sculptor and medallist. We was a prolific medallist producing about twenty-five hundred medals over the span of fifty years from 1930 to 1980. About fifteen hundred of his medals were religious, another eight hundred related to sports and about 150 were portrait medals. Contaux died at Vigneux-sur-Seine on September 15, 1984.
