1929, France. GEORGES CLEMENCEAU, 1841-1929, Statesman. By Henri Dropsy. Cast bronze 96mm. Obv: High relief head of Georges Clemenceau facing right. Rev: A female, brandishing a sword, grabbing a nude warrior by the hair and subduing him. Numbered 48 on its edge. Maier 305. Extremely fine. $575. ———- Henry Dropsy was born in Paris on January 21, 1885, into a family of sculptors. He learned his craft under his father Jean-Baptiste ?mile Dropsy. He later studied at l??cole Sup?rieure des Beaux Arts. He was a professor of medal engraving at the school for many years. Dropsy became a member of the Institut in 1942 and a member of the Commission Administrative and of the Commission du Dictionaire. He created many medals. A large collection of his work is held at the Monnaie de Paris, which put on a special exhibition of his medals in 1964, the catalogue for which remains a standard reference. His earliest works are in the art nouveau style. His style evolved considerably over his long career. Dropsy died at Veneux-Les-Sablon on November 2, 1969.

Sorry, SOLD (February, 2023) ———– Jean ?mile Louis de Vernon (known as Jean Vernon) was the son of medallist and sculptor Fr?d?ric-Charles Victor de Vernon. He was born in Paris on April 1 1897. Vernon studied at the ?cole des Arts D?coratifs and at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, under Jules Coutan and Hippolyte Jules Lef?bvre. He first exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais in 1922 and won a silver medal in 1924 and a gold medal in 1936. Vernon worked primarily as a sculptor, but created medals, including his famous series of medals depicting scenes from Jean de la Fontaine’s Fables. He died in Paris on September 9 1975.
