1930, France. 400TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE COLLEGE DU FRANCE. By Pierre Turin. Bronze 68mm. OBVERSE: The head of a female holding a lighted torch with rays issuing forth. REVERSE: A statue of Guillaume Budé. Catalogue Général Illustré. vol. 3 378/D. $225.

Pierre Turin was born in Sucy-en-Brie (Val-de-Marne) on 3 August, 1891. He trained as a steel engraver and became a student at the École Nationale Supèrieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He studied medal engraving under Henri Auguste Jules Patey and Fréderic-Charles Victor de Vernon. He participated several times in the competition for the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving, receiving a deuxième second Grand Prix in 1914, a premier second Grand Prix in 1919 and finally winning the competition in 1920. He had a distinguished career as a medalist and designer of coins.  He is noted for his many works with a bold, Art Deco style, in particular the prize medal from the 1925 Exposition Internationale Des Arts Decoratifs Et Industriels Moderns in Paris. In 1938 he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur. Turin died on July 25, 1968 in Sucy-en-Brie, where he had been born. 1891, France. GUSTAVE SANDOZ, 1836-1891. By S?raphin-?mile Vernier. Uniface cast bronze 157mm. $275. ——— Gustave Santos established a firm of goldsmiths, jewellers and clock makers in Paris in 1864. His son and grandson later join the firm, which eventually closed in 1931. ——— S?raphin-?mile Vernier, sculptor and medallist was born in Paris in 1852. He exhibited at the Salon of 1876 and won a bronze medal at the Universal Exposition of 1900. In 1912 he was made an officer of the L?gion d?Honneur. He was the president of the Soci?t? des Artistes d?corateurs from 1905-1910. Vernier died in 1927.
