Pierre-Jean David, known as David d’Angers, was born at Angers on March 12 1788. His father was a sculptor. David studied under Marchand and Jean-Jacques Delusse at l’ École Central d’Angers between 1806 and 1807. In 1811 he won the Grand Prix de Rome for a bas relief of “Mort d’Épaminondas” After his stay in Rome, he traveled through France to London, where he met Flaxman and worked with him on a monument to the Duke of Wellington. He returned to France in 1818 He quickly established his reputation and was made a chevalier de la Légion d’Honeur in 1825 and was elected as a member of l’Institute de France in the following year. He served as a professor at l’École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He is celebrated for many sculptures, but especially for his extensive series of portrait medallions. David died in Paris on January 6 1856.
