He studied under Ponscarme, Thomas and Levillain at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He was director of the ?cole des Beaux-Arts at Dijon. He won gold medals at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais in 1900 and in 1920. Yencesse was made a Chevalier of the L?gion d?Honneur in 1900. Many of his medallic works have a distinctive, subtle effect using a soft, shallow relief.

Sorry, SOLD (May, 2020) —— Charles Philippe Germain Aristide Pillet, sculptor and medallist was born on 20 July 1869 in Paris . He studied under Henri-Michel-Antoine Chapu and Jules-Cl?ment Chaplain. He won the premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1890. He became a soci?taire des Artistes Fran?ais in 1898. In 1900 he won a silver medal at the Universal Exposition. Pillet was made a chevalier of the L?gion d’Honneur in 1911. He won the Salon?s medal of honor in 1923. Pillet died in 1960.

(Val-de-Marne) in 1869. He studied under the sculptor, Henri-Michel-Antoine Chapu. Starting in 1887 he exhibited at the Salon of the Soci?t? des Artistes Fran?ais. He won a silver medal at the Universal Exhibition in 1900. In 1907 he was made a Chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur. He was interested in and wrote about art theory. Nocq created medals, plaquettes, sculpture and many artistically designed everyday objects. He died in 1944.

1982, France. EVE. By Henry Dropsy. Bronze 50mm. OBVERSE: Eve and the serpent in front of the Tree of Knowledge. REVERSE: A wreath enclosing a butterfly and inscription: 5 Mai 1926 / 31 Decembre 1982. $60 Sorry, SOLD (January, 2022) ——— Henry Dropsy was born in Paris on January 21, 1885, into a family of sculptors. He learned his craft under his father Jean-Baptiste ?mile Dropsy. He later studied at l??cole Sup?rieure des Beaux Arts. He was a professor of medal engraving at the school for many years. Dropsy became a member of the Institut in 1942 and a member of the Commission Administrative and of the Commission du Dictionaire. He created many medals. A large collection of his work is held at the Monnaie de Paris, which put on a special exhibition of his medals in 1964, the catalogue for which remains a standard reference. His earliest works are in the art nouveau style. His style evolved considerably over his long career. Dropsy died at Veneux-Les-Sablon on November 2, 1969.

Cased. $295. Sorry, SOLD ———- Marie-Alexandre Lucien Coudray was born in Paris on February 21 1864. He studied at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts and was a student of Dumont, Thomas, Allouard and Ponscarme. In 1893 he won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving for Orph?e endort Cerb?re aux sons de sa lyre (Orpheus putting Cerebus to sleep by the sound of his lyre), In 1898 he won a first prize at the Salon and a silver medal at the Universal Exposition. Coudray?s best known work is his portrait of Orpheus, which was offered for sale by the Monnaie de Paris, at the Universal Exposition in 1900. 4,500 examples which struck to meet the demand. Coudray died in 1932.

He participated several times in the competition for the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving, receiving a deuxi?me second Grand Prix in 1914, a premier second Grand Prix in 1919 and finally winning the competition in 1920. He had a distinguished career as a medalist and designer of coins. He is noted for his many works with a bold, Art Deco style, in particular the prize medal from the 1925 Exposition Internationale Des Arts Decoratifs Et Industriels Moderns in Paris. In 1938 he was made a Chevalier of the L?gion d?Honneur. Turin died in 1968.

Sorry, SOLD (November, 2021) ———- ?mile Fernand-Dubois, sculptor, engraver and medallist, was born in Paris in 1869. He worked for a time under Auguste Rodin and spent three years at Pierre Bingen?s foundry, where he created a number of works using the cire perdue method of casting. He exhibited at the Salon des artistes fran?ais, becoming a member in 1902. He won a gold medal in 1923. He is noted in particular for his many war memorials. Fernand-Dubois died in 1952.

High relief cast bronze approximately 9 ? inches in diameter. $750. ———– Henri Michel Antoine Chapu was born on September 29 1833 at M?e-sur-Seine, where his parents worked as a coachman and housekeeper. He showed an aptitude for art and won a scholarship. He studied under James Pradier, Francisque Duret and L?on Cogniet at the ?cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1851 he won the second grand prix de Rome in medal engraving for ?Neptune Giving Birth to a Horse.? In 1853 he won the second Grand Prix de Rome in sculpture for ?Alexander’s Despair after the Death of Clitus. In 1855 he won the first Grand Prix de Rome jointly with Am?d?e Doublemard, His sculpture ?Cl?obis and Biton? was accidently damaged during transit, but was nonetheless selected unanimously by the jury. While at the Villa Medicis he made portrait medallions of some of his colleagues. He continued to make medals throughout his career and helped lead the revival of the medal ass an art form. He struggled in his early years. Chapu exhibited at the Salon from 1863 onwards. His statues of ?Mercury? of 1861 and ?Jeanne d’Arc? of 1870 were his big successes, and led to many commissions. He was made an Officer of the L?gion d?Honeur. Chapu died in Paris on April 21 1891.
