France. GYMNASTIQUE. By Claude Mascaux (1882-1965). Bronze 50mm. $195. Sorry, SOLD (July, 2022) ———- L?on-Claude Mascaux (1882-1965) was born in Saine-Germain-en-Lay (Yvelines). He studied under the sculptors Landowski and Bouchard. He first exhibited at the Salon of the Soci?t? des Beaux Arts in 1921 and won a bronze medal in 1924. In the following year he won a Grand Prix at the Exposition des Arts D?oratifs et Industriels Moderns. Unlike his contemporaries, he eschewed the reducing machine and cut his models directly into the plaster in the actual size of his intended medals. His medals typically reflect a strong Art Deco style. This design was created for exhibition at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris. It is one of a series of designs that breaks away from the traditional representations by using animals to characterize various sporting events.
