Undated (late 19th century), France. GYMNATIQUE, PRIZE MEDAL PRESENTED BY GENERAL DESSIRIER. By Alfred Borrel and Henri Dubois. Silver 51mm. Obv: A youth standing between Hercules and Hygeia. Rev: A circular, inscribed tablet within a wreath. Cat. Gen. vol. 3 57/G. Nearly extremely fine. $135.? Sorry, SOLD Alfred Borrel was born in Paris in 1836. He studied under his father Valentin- Maurice Borrel and under Jouffroy and Merley. As a student at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts. He won the third grand prix de Rome for medal engraving. We was a soci?taire des Artistes Fran?ais. He won a second class medal at the salon in 1880, a second class medal in 1890, and a first class medal in 1893. He was made a chevalier de la L?gion d’Honneur in 1906. Borrel died in 1927.
