Karl Goetz was born at Augsburg in 1875. He attended the Art School in Augsburg, and later the art schools in Dresden, Leipzig , Berlin and Dusseldorf. He spent five years in Paris and later moved to Munich, where he settled in 1904. Goetz was a prolific medallist, most noted for his satirical works, especially those of World War I. Goetz died in 1950.

He was a student of Thomas and Ponscarme. He first exhibited at the Salon in 1892, where he won a medal in 1920.

Sorry, SOLD (February, 2022). ——— Franz Huygelen was born on19 August 1878, in Antwerp. He studied at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp and, under Thomas Vin?otte, at the Hoger Instituut. He won the Belgian Prix de Rome. Huygelen died at Ukkel in 1940. He created a number of medals, which were struck in a large format without a border. They have a distinctive, free-flowing style.

France. DANSEUSE. By Henry Dropsy. Uniface bronze 50mm. $90. Sorry, SOLD (May, 2023)

Henry Dropsy was born in Paris on January 21, 1885, into a family of sculptors.  He learned his craft under his father Jean-Baptiste Émile Dropsy. He later studied at l’École Supérieure des Beaux Arts. He was a professor of medal engraving at the school for many years. Dropsy became a member of the Institut in 1942 and a member of the Commission Administrative and of the Commission du Dictionaire. He created many medals. A large collection of his work is held at the Monnaie de Paris, which put on a special exhibition of his medals in 1964, the catalogue for which remains a standard reference. His earliest works are in the art nouveau style. His style evolved considerably over his long career. Dropsy died at Veneux-Les-Sablon on November 2, 1969.

The finish of this medal appears to be somewhat later. It is slightly glossy with a somewhat pinkish tone, a finish that seems to have been used in the late 1950s and early 1960s. $125. Jean Émile Louis de Vernon (known as Jean Vernon) was the son of medallist and sculptor Frédéric-Charles Victor de Vernon. He was born in Paris on April 1, 1897. Vernon studied at the École  des Arts Décoratifs and at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, under Jules Coutan and Hippolyte Jules Lefèbvre. He first exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1922 and won a silver medal in 1924 and a gold medal in 1936. Vernon worked primarily as a sculptor, but created medals, including his famous series of medals depicting scenes from Jean de la Fontaine’s Fables. He died in Paris on September 9, 1975.

Raymond Delamarre was born in Paris on June 8, 1890. He studied under his father, an engraver, and under Jules Coutan at l’École des beaux-arts de Paris. He was also a student of Rodin. He was mobilized in World War I and was wounded and captured in 1914. He returned to Paris following the war and won the first Grand Prize de Rome for Sculpture in 1919. He exhibited at the international expositions of 1925, 1931 and 1937. Delamarre is noted for large scale sculptures, and a bas-relief, Les Arts et Monuments Régionau on the liner ‘Normandie.”   He created a large body of medals and plaquettes. He returned to Nancy in 1704 and was appointed as Engraver at the mint there in 1797. He created over 120 medals, most of which have a distinctive border, such as that on this medal. Saint-Urbain died in Nancy on January 10, 1738.
