Sorry, SOLD (June, 2024) ———- Charles Philippe Germain Aristide Pillet, sculptor and medallist was born on 20 July 1869 in Paris . He studied under Henri-Michel-Antoine Chapu and Jules-Cl?ment Chaplain. He won the premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1890. He became a soci?taire des Artistes Fran?ais in 1898. In 1900 he won a silver medal at the Universal Exposition. Pillet was made a chevalier of the L?gion d’Honneur in 1911. He won the Salon?s medal of honor in 1923. Pillet died in 1960.

1917, U.S.A. 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF NEW ORLEANS. By Abel Lafleur. Bronze 68mm. $225. Sorry, SOLD (July, 2024). ——— Abel Lafleur was born in Rodez (Aveyron) on 5 November 1875. He studied under Ponscarme, Chaplain and Charpentier at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts. He exhibited for the first time in 1901 at the Salon of the Soci?t? des Artistes Fran?ais, where he later won a gold medal and became a member of the Committee. He also exhibited at the Salon des Ind?pendents and the Salon d?Automne. He created several monumental works and created the cup awarded by the International Football Federation. Lafleur died in 1953.

1939, France. 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION. Pierre Turin (1891-1968, Grand Prix de Rome in 1920). Bronze 58mm. Catalogue Général Illustré vol. 3 376/B. $225. Sorry, SOLD (January, 2022)

Pierre Turin was born in Sucy-en-Brie (Val-de-Marne) on 3 August, 1891. He trained as a steel engraver and became a student at the École Nationale Supèrieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He studied medal engraving under Henri Auguste Jules Patey and Fréderic-Charles Victor de Vernon. He participated several times in the competition for the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving, receiving a deuxième second Grand Prix in 1914, a premier second Grand Prix in 1919 and finally winning the competition in 1920. He had a distinguished career as a medalist and designer of coins.  He is noted for his many works with a bold, Art Deco style, in particular the prize medal from the 1925 Exposition Internationale Des Arts Decoratifs Et Industriels Moderns in Paris. In 1938 he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur. Turin died on July 25, 1968 in Sucy-en-Brie, where he had been born.

Ludwig Gies was born in Munich on September 3, 1887. He attended the Municipal Trade School from 1902-1903. He apprenticed at Winhart & Co., where he learned chasing and attended evening and Sunday classes in wood carving and modelling. While still at Winhart and Co. he studied at the Royal School of Applied Arts, where he was introduced to medal making, which would have a significant impact on his career during which he created numerous medals. He also created sculptures. His crucifix in Lubeck Cathedral was condemned as overly expressionistic. It was vandalized in 1922 and later displayed in the exhibition of “degenerate” art in Munich in 1937. He died on January 27, 1967,

Ernesta Robert-Mérignac, sculptor and medallist was born at Saint-Omer on August 25 1849. She studied under Mlle Geneviève Granger, Mlle Darbefeille and Georges Récipon. She exhibited four plaquettes in 1905 at the Salon des Artistes Français and several medals in 1906 and at the 1924 Olympics. She was the daughter of fencing master Charles Gustave Robert and wife of another, Émile Mérignac. Her nephew Lucien  Mérignac won the gold medal in the 1900 Olympic Foil Masters event. Robert-Mérignac, died at Paris on February 28 1933.

Pierre-Alexandre Morlon (1878-1951) was born at Mâcon. He initially worked under his father, a marble worker, but later moved to Paris, where he studied under the sculptors Alexandre Falguière and Claude Antoine Mercié. He became a regular exhibitor at the Salon of the Société des Artistes Français. He produced several war memorials following World War I and is noted, among medal collectors, for his medals related to World War I. Morlon designed an effigy of Marianne in a Phrygian cap, which was used on the fifty centime, one franc and two-franc coins from 1931 until 1959. He also designed coins for Uruguay. He was made a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in 1927. He died at Houdan on February 24, 1951.

France. DUVAL JANVIER. By Alexandre Charpentier. Plaquette bronze 60mm x 53mm. Obv: A semi-nude male working a screw press. Cf Art of the Medal 345. $100. Sorry, SOLD (September, 2022) ——- Alexandre-Louis-Marie Charpentier, medalist, sculptor and craftsman was born in Paris in 1856. He initially trained as a jeweler, then worked under a medallist. This led him to entering L??cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts, where he studied medal engraving from 1871 ? 1876 in the studio of Hubert Ponscarme. Charpentier first exhibited at the Salon in 1877 with a portrait medallion of his mother and in 1879 exhibited ?Tireur d?Arc,? a bas-relief, which was purchased by Alexandre Dumas. He with Ponscarme, Louis-Oscar Roty and others was responsible for the resurgence of medallic art in France in the late 19th century. Charpentier died at Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1909.
