Sorry, SOLD (May, 2020) ———– Jules-Cl?ment Chaplain (1839-1909) was born at Mortagne. He entered the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1857. He studied under the sculptor, Jouffroy, and Eugene-Andr? Oudin?, the medallist. He won the first prize at the Concours de Rome in 1862. He studied in Italy from 1864 to 1868. Cahplain was elected to the Acad?mie des Beaux-Arts in 1881 and became an officer of the L?gion d’Honneur in 1888.

Raymond Tschudin was born in Champigny-sur-Marne on November 2 1916. He was the son of a medalist and came early to his profession. He studied under Henry Dropsy at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. In 1945 he won the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving and studied at the Villa Medicis from 1946 to 1949. He was the creator of a large number of medals, many of which have religious themes. Tschudin died at Provins on November 28 1998

1969 (edge stamp). France. SOPHACLES. By Pierre Turin (1891-1968, Grand Prix de Rome in 1920). Bronze 81mm. Catalogue Général Illustré volume 4 1838/C. One of Turin’s final medals designed in the year of his death and issued posthumously. $125. Sorry, SOLD (June, 2021).

Pierre Turin was born in Sucy-en-Brie (Val-de-Marne) on 3 August, 1891. He trained as a steel engraver and became a student at the École Nationale Supèrieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He studied medal engraving under Henri Auguste Jules Patey and Fréderic-Charles Victor de Vernon. He participated several times in the competition for the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving, receiving a deuxième second Grand Prix in 1914, a premier second Grand Prix in 1919 and finally winning the competition in 1920. He had a distinguished career as a medalist and designer of coins.  He is noted for his many works with a bold, Art Deco style, in particular the prize medal from the 1925 Exposition Internationale Des Arts Decoratifs Et Industriels Moderns in Paris. In 1938 he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur. Turin died on July 25, 1968 in Sucy-en-Brie, where he had been born.

Maurice Delannoy was born on March 11, 1885, in Paris.  He studied at the École Germain Pilon under Charles Valton and Jules Édouard Roiné. He became a professor of drawing and worked as a medallisst and sculptor. He designed coins for Morocco, Monaco and Lebanon, and a considerable number of medals. Delannoy was made a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in 1947. He died in Paris on April 26, 1972.

He studied at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, and in the studios of Ponscarme and Peter. In the course of his career he received numerous honors and became a Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur. Monier died in 1970.

He later moved to Paris, where he studied under the sculptors Falgui?re and Merci?. He became a regular exhibitor at the Salon of the Soci?t? des Artistes Fran?ais. He produced several war memorials following World War I and is noted, among medal collectors, for his medals related to World War I. He was made a Chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur in 1927.

France. THE THREE GRACES. By Henry Dropsy (1885-1969). Bronze 50mm. $150. Sorry, SOLD (May, 2022)

Henry Dropsy was born in Paris on January 21, 1885, into a family of sculptors.  He learned his craft under his father Jean-Baptiste Émile Dropsy. He later studied at l’École Supérieure des Beaux Arts. He was a professor of medal engraving at the school for many years. Dropsy became a member of the Institut in 1942 and a member of the Commission Administrative and of the Commission du Dictionaire. He created many medals. A large collection of his work is held at the Monnaie de Paris, which put on a special exhibition of his medals in 1964, the catalogue for which remains a standard reference. His earliest works are in the art nouveau style. His style evolved considerably over his long career. Dropsy died at Veneux-Les-Sablon on November 2, 1969.
