Sorry, SOLD (June, 2021) ———– ?tienne Victor Exbrayat, sculptor, engraver and medallist was born at Saint-?tienne on May 12 1879. He received an honorable mention at the Salon des artistes fran?ais in 1904 and received a troisi?me m?daille in 1911. Exbrayrat became a member of la Soci?t? des artistes fran?ais in 1905. Following the outbreak of World War I, he was made a corporal in the 16e r?giment d’infanterie, he died of battle wounds at the ch?teau de Bains at Boulogne-la-Grasse on October 1914.

He won the first Grand Prix de Rome for sculpture in 1921. He won gold medals in 1931 and at the International Exposition in 1937. He was director of Beaux- Arts de Marseille from 1942-1961.

Sorry, SOLD (August, 2023) ———– Raoul B?nard was born on 30 September, 1881. He studied under the sculptor Coutan and the medallists Chaplain and Vernon. In 1911 he won the Prix de Rome for medal engraving and, in 1922, a silver medal at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais, followed by a gold medal two years later. He was later made a Chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur. B?nard died in 1961.

France. RATIO RERUM. By Henry Dropsy (1885-1969). Uniface bronze 50mm x 50mm. $75. Sorry, SOLD (February, 2024)

Henry Dropsy was born in Paris on January 21, 1885, into a family of sculptors.  He learned his craft under his father Jean-Baptiste Émile Dropsy. He later studied at l’École Supérieure des Beaux Arts. He was a professor of medal engraving at the school for many years. Dropsy became a member of the Institut in 1942 and a member of the Commission Administrative and of the Commission du Dictionaire. He created many medals. A large collection of his work is held at the Monnaie de Paris, which put on a special exhibition of his medals in 1964, the catalogue for which remains a standard reference. His earliest works are in the art nouveau style. His style evolved considerably over his long career. Dropsy died at Veneux-Les-Sablon on November 2, 1969.

Léon-Claude Mascaux was born in Saine-Germain-en-Lay (Yvelines) on June 13 1882,  He studied under the sculptors Landowski and Bouchard. He first exhibited at the Salon of the Société des Beaux Arts in 1921. In 1924 he won a medal in the artistic comptetion of the Olumpic Games. In the following year he won a Grand Prix at the Exposition des Arts Déoratifs et Industriels Moderns for a series seven sports-themed medals. Unlike his contemporaries, he eschewed the reducing machine and cut his models directly into the plaster in the actual size of his intended medals. His medals typically reflect a strong Art Deco style. Mascaux died at Fontainebleau on March 8 1965.

François Maurice Thénot was born in 1893. He studied under Patey. He exhibited in the Salon des Artistes and won a bronze medal in 1927 and a silver medal in 1936. His medallic works include a fine series of plaquettes and medals depicting African animals. Thénot died in 1963.

Jacques Wiener, whose given name was Jacob, was born on March 2, 1815, at Hoerstgen (Rhine Province) to Hungarian parents. He seems to have started using Jacques as his name when he moved to Belgium. At the age of 13 he went to live with his uncle Baruth, an artist, and studied drawing, modelling and engraving. In 1835 he moved to Paris to perfect his skills and in 1839 moved to Brussels, where he established himself as an engraver. He became a naturalized Belgian in 1845. He created an extensive body of medals and is best known for his finely detailed architectural medals, especially his series of Most Remarkable Edifices. He is also widely known for engraving the first Belgian postage stamp. Wiener died in Brussels in 1899.
