1930, Belgium. INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION, LIEGE. By Godefroid Devreese (1861-1941). Bronze 70mm. OBVERSE: A scientist and a worker. REVERSE: A semi-nude female. $100. Sorry, SOLD (February, 2020). ——– Godefroid Devreese was one of Belgium’s most prolific medallists. He was born at Courtrai in 1861. He studied sculpture under his father and later at the Academy of Brussels. In 1885 he won the second Grand Prix de Rome. In 1889 he won the first Grand Prix for sculpture at the Academy of Brussels and a gold medal at the International Exposition in Cologne. A brief biography and a complete catalogue of his medallic works is provided in GODEFROID DEVRESE 1861-1941 by Poels, Vandamme and Van Dreiessche.

Louis Oscar Roty (1846-1911) was born at Paris. He initially studied painting at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts under Lecoq and Boisbaudran. It is reported that he lost the money for a paint box and subsequently enrolled in a life-drawing class and thence into sculpting. This trajectory would eventually lead to his career as the most celebrated medallist of his time. Along the way, he studied in the atelier of the statuary Augustin Dumont and under Ponscarme, Chapu and Chaplain. Roty spent three years in Rome, where he modeled a number of waxes. He won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome in 1875.? In 1888 he was elected to the Acad?mie des Beaux-Arts. He took the grand prize at the International Exposition in 1889. He was a commander of the L?gion d?Honneur. He was responsible for reintroducing the plaquette, an art form that had been neglected since the Renaissance.

He studied under his father, an engraver, and under Jules Coutan at l’?cole des beaux-arts de Paris. He was also a student of Rodin. He was mobilized in World War I and was wounded and captured in 1914. He returned to Paris following the war and won the first Grand Prize de Rome for Sculpture in 1919. He exhibited at the international expositions of 1925, 1931 and 1937. Delamarre is noted for large scale sculptures, and a bas-relief, Les Arts et Monuments R?gionau on the liner ?Normandie.? He created a large body of medals and plaquettes. Delamarre died on February 28 1986. ——- A biography and discussion of his work are included in RAYMOND DELAMARRE 1890-1896, published in 2007 to coincide with an exhibition of his work.

He studied at the ?cole des Beaux Arts in Toulouse and later moved to Paris to study sculpture. He received a scholarship for the Villa Abd-el-Tif in Algeria in 1908. He worked primarily as a sculptor and only turned to creating medals later in his career.
