France, sports. GYMNASTIQUE. By Pierre-Alexandre Morlon (1878-1951). Bronze plaquette 51mm x 53mm. OBVERSE: Three gymnasts. REVERSE: Branches either side of a circular compartment. Cased. $60. Sorry, SOLD. ———— Pierre-Alexandre Morlon (1878-1951) was born at M?con. He initially worked under his father, a marble worker, but later moved to Paris, where he studied under the sculptors Alexandre Falgui?re and Merci?. He became a regular exhibitor at the Salon of the Soci?t? des Artistes Fran?ais. He produced several war memorials following World War I and is noted, among medal collectors, for his medals related to World War I. Morlon designed an effigy of Marianne in a Phrygian cap, which was used on the fifty centime, one franc and two franc coins from 1931 until 1959. He also designed coins for Uruguay. He was made a Chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur in 1927. He died at Houdan on February 24 1951.

He won a second class medal at the salon in 1880, a second class medal in 1890, and a first class medal in 1893. He was made a chevalier de la L?gion d’Honneur in 1906. Borrel died in 1927.
