1898, France. AGENTS DE CHANGE, PARIS. By Oscar Roty. Silver 38mm. Obv: A winged child holding a cornucopia from which coins flow into a chest supported in the lap of a seated female. Sorry, SOLD (June, 2024)———— Louis Oscar Roty was born at Paris on June 11, 1846. He initially studied painting at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts under Lecoq and Boisbaudran. It is reported that he lost the money for a paint box and subsequently enrolled in a life-drawing class and thence into sculpting. This trajectory would eventually lead to his career as the most celebrated medallist of his time. Along the way, he studied in the atelier of the statuary Augustin Dumont and under Ponscarme, Chapu and Chaplain. He won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1875. Roty spent three years in Rome, where he modeled a number of waxes. In 1888 he was elected to the Acad?mie des Beaux-Arts. He took the grand prize at the International Exposition in 1889. Roty was a commander of the L?gion d?Honneur. He was responsible for reintroducing the plaquette, an art form that had been neglected since the Renaissance. His ?Semeuse? (sower) was widely used on French coins and stamps. He died in Paris on March 23, 1911.

Sorry, SOLD (May, 2021) ———— Henry Dropsy was born in Paris on January 21, 1885, into a family of sculptors. He learned his craft under his father Jean-Baptiste ?mile Dropsy. He later studied at l??cole Sup?rieure des Beaux Arts. He was a professor of medal engraving at the school for many years. Dropsy became a member of the Institut in 1942 and a member of the Commission Administrative and of the Commission du Dictionaire. He created many medals. A large collection of his work is held at the Monnaie de Paris, which put on a special exhibition of his medals in 1964, the catalogue for which remains a standard reference. His earliest works are in the art nouveau style. His style evolved considerably over his long career. Dropsy died at Veneux-Les-Sablon on November 2, 1969.

Hippolyte Lef?bvre, sculptor and medallist, was born in Lille. He studied at the Acad?mie des Beaux-Arts in Lille, where he won first prizes in drawing and sculpture. He later entered the ?cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he won numerous prizes. He exhibited at the Salon and won the Grand Prix de Rome in sculpture in 1892. Lef?bvre won gold medals for medals that he exhibited at the 1900 Universal Exposition.

1941, France. PLS. By Maurice Delannoy (1885-1972). Bronze 57mm. Cased. $90. Sorry, SOLD (December, 2022) ————- Maurice Delannoy was born on March 11, 1885 in Paris. He studied at the ?cole Germain Pilon under Charles Valton and Jules ?douard Roin?. He became a professor of drawing and worked as a medallisst and sculptor. He designed coins for Morocco, Monaco and Lebanon, and a considerable number of medals. Delannoy was made a Chevalier de la L?gion d’Honneur in 1947. He died in Paris on April 26, 1972.

1978, France. JAMES GILRAY, Caricaturist. By Ronald Searle. Plated-copper 95mm. No. 27 of an edition of 100 published by Club Français de la Médaille. $125. Sorry, SOLD

Ronald William Fordham Searle was born in Cambridge on March 3, 1920. He is best known as a satirical cartoonist and illustrator, and for being the creator of St. Trinian’s School. He started creating medals long after he had established his reputation. Searle started drawing at the age of five and left school at the age of 15. He trained at Cambridge College of Arts and Technology (now Anglia Ruskin University). In 1939 he enlisted in the army. In 1942 he was stationed in Singapore. He fought in Malaya and was taken prisoner. Searle was moved to the Kwai Jungle, where he worked on the “Death Railway.” He suffered considerably during his imprisonment, contracting beri-beri and malaria, and was subjected to beatings. His weight dropped to under 90 pounds. During his captivity he made drawings that documented the atrocities he observed. He kept them hidden. About 300 survived the war. They are documented in a book published in 1986. The originals are in the collection of the Imperial War Museum. After the War, Searle served as a courtroom artist at the Nuremberg trials. During the 1950s he produced an extraordinary amount of work, which was published in many leading publications, including Punch and the New Yorker. In 1961 he moved to Paris. He died on December 30, 2011 in Provence.

Paul-Marcel Dammann, sculptor and medallist was born on June 13, 1885, at Montgerm. He studied under Chaplain. In 1908 he won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving. In 1928 he won a medal of honor at the Salon and was made a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in the following year. He designed a number of coins for foreign governments. Dammann died in 1939.

This work is attributed to Maurice Charpentier-Mio in the Paris Mint Catalogue, but that is an error. Alexandre-Louis-Marie Charpentier, medalist, sculptor and craftsman was born in 1856. He with Ponscarme, Louis-Oscar Roty and others was responsible for the resurgence of medallic art in France in the late 19th century. Charpentier died in 1909.
