Raymond Joly (1911-?) began to study sculpture in 1937 and entered the atelier of Henry Dropsy in 1939 at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieur des Beaux-Arts. He won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1942.

1894,France. THE DEATH OF PRESIDENT SADI CARNOT. By Louis Oscar Roty. Plaquette. Bronze 57mm x 80mm. Marianne, with her head bowed, standing before the draped body of Sadi Carnot. Rev: A group of women in classical dress carrying his coffin towards a church. Cat. Gen. vol. 3 258/A, Art of the Medal 323. $150. Sorry, SOLD (July, 2023). ———– Louis Oscar Roty (1846-1911) was born at Paris. He initially studied painting at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts under Lecoq and Boisbaudran. It is reported that he lost the money for a paint box and subsequently enrolled in a life-drawing class and thence into sculpting. This trajectory would eventually lead to his career as the most celebrated medallist of his time. Along the way, he studied in the atelier of the statuary Augustin Dumont and under Ponscarme, Chapu and Chaplain. Roty spent three years in Rome, where he modeled a number of waxes. He won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome in 1875.? In 1888 he was elected to the Acad?mie des Beaux-Arts. He took the grand prize at the International Exposition in 1889. He was a commander of the L?gion d?Honneur. He was responsible for reintroducing the plaquette, an art form that had been neglected since the Renaissance.

Pierre Turin (1891-1968) was a student at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He studied under Henri Auguste Jules Patey and Fr?deric-Charles Victor de Vernon. In 1920 he won the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving. He created many medals, often with a bold, Art Deco style.

The commission for this medal was originally given to W. Wilson and was intended to be issued in 1847. In 1848, when the medal still had not been produced, the thirty winners of the silver medals were given the option of selecting either a medal of Chantrey or Reynolds. It still had not been delivered in 1849 and the job was passed to William Wyon. In 1851 Wyon reported a delay due to an accident. He died later in the year, which led to the work being passed to Henry Weigall. In 1854 thirty new prize winners were presented with the silver medal, the winners of 1847 presumably having selected either of the alternatives offered a few years earlier.

?mile Monier, sculptor and medallist was born in 1883. He studied at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, and in the studios of Ponscarme and Peter. In the course of his career he received numerous honors and became a Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur. Monier died in 1970.

In 1908 he won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome. In 1928 he won a medal of honor at the Salon and was made a Chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur in the following year. He designed a number of coins for foreign governments. Dammann died in 1939.
