Henri Auguste Jules Patey, sculptor and medallist was born in Paris in 1855. In 1873 he entered the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieur des Beaux-Arts. He studied sculpture under Capu and medal engraving under Chaplain. He first exhibited at the Salon in 1877 and won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome, for medal engraving, in 1881. He won a bronze medal at the Universal Exposition of 1889 and a gold medal at the Exposition of 1900. In 1896 he succeeded Lagrange as engraver-general of coins.
