Lucien Bazor was born in 1889. He studied under Auguste Patey at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux Arts. He won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1923. He succeeded Patey in the post of Engraver General at the Paris Mint, a post he held until 1958. Bazor died in 1974.

The ‘Georges Philippar’ set out on its maiden voyage from Marseille on February 26, 1932. On its return journey a fire broke out and spread rapidly. Fifty-four lives were lost and 704 were rescued.
Auguste Maillard, sculptor and medallist was born in 1866. He studied under Dalou, Gaudez and Falgui?re. He won a second class medal at the Salon of 1898 and a third class medal at the Universal Exposition in 1900. Maillard died in 1944.

Wiener, Jacques: THE CONVENT OF BATALHA

 

(1853) Portugal. MONASTERY OF BATALHA. By Jacques Wiener. Bronze 60mm. Hoydonck 103, Reinecke 55, Ross M119. $250. Reserved. ———— Jacques Wiener, whose given name was Jacob, was born on March 2, 1815, at Hoerstgen (Rhine Province) to Hungarian parents. He seems to have started using Jacques as his name when he moved to Belgium. At the age of 13 he went to live with his uncle Baruth, an artist, and studied drawing, modelling and engraving. In 1835 he moved to Paris to perfect his skills and in 1839 moved to Brussels, where he established himself as an engraver. He became a naturalized Belgian in 1845. He created an extensive body of medals and is best known for his finely detailed architectural medals, especially his series of Most Remarkable Edifices. He is also widely known for engraving the first Belgian postage stamp. Wiener died in Brussels in 1899.
