Sorry, SOLD {October, 2022).————- Karl Goetz was born at Augsburg in 1875. He attended the Art School in Augsburg, and later the art schools in Dresden, Leipzig , Berlin and Dusseldorf. He spent five years in Paris and later moved to Munich, where he settled in 1904. Goetz was a prolific medallist, most noted for his satirical works, especially those of World War I. Goetz died in 1950.

Roger Alphonse B?tannier, was born in Paris in 1920, He exhibited in the sculpture section at the Salon in 1947 and apparently died in the same year. He created several medals in his short career. B?tannier died in 1999.

France. THEODORIC OF LORRAINE AND GERTRUDE OF FLANDERS. By Ferdinand de Saint Urbain. Bronze 45mm. $125.

Ferdinand de Saint-Urbain was born at Nancy on June 30, 1658 (or possibly 1654, according to one source), the son of Claude Augustin de Saint-Urbain, a goldsmith and engraver. In 1673 he was appointed Mint-engraver at Bologna. In 1683 he moved to Rome, where he was appointed Chief engraver by Innocent XI. He returned to Nancy in 1704 and was appointed as Engraver at the mint there in 1797. He created over 120 medals, most of which have a distinctive border, such as that on this medal. Saint-Urbain died in Nancy on January 10, 1738.

1977, France. ANTOINE WATTEAU, painter. By Ronald Searle. Bronze 91mm. $125

Ronald William Fordham Searle was born in Cambridge on March 3, 1920. He is best known as a satirical cartoonist and illustrator, and for being the creator of St. Trinian?s School. He started creating medals long after he had established his reputation. Searle started drawing at the age of five and left school at the age of 15. He trained at Cambridge College of Arts and Technology (now Anglia Ruskin University). In 1939 he enlisted in the army. In 1942 he was stationed in Singapore. He fought in Malaya and was taken prisoner. Searle was moved to the Kwai Jungle, where he worked on the ?Death Railway.? He suffered considerably during his imprisonment, contracting beri-beri and malaria, and was subjected to beatings. His weight dropped to under 90 pounds. During his captivity he made drawings that documented the atrocities he observed. He kept them hidden. About 300 survived the war. They are documented in a book published in 1986. The originals are in the collection of the Imperial War Museum. After the War, Searle served as a courtroom artist at the Nuremberg trials. During the 1950s he produced an extraordinary amount of work, which was published in many leading publications, including Punch and the New Yorker. In 1961 he moved to Paris. He died on December 30, 2011 in Provence.

Hippolyte Lef?bvre, sculptor and medallist, was born in Lille. He studied at the Acad?mie des Beaux-Arts in Lille, where he won first prizes in drawing and sculpture. He later entered the ?cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he won numerous prizes. He exhibited at the Salon and won the Grand Prix de Rome in sculpture in 1892. Lef?bvre won gold medals for medals that he exhibited at the 1900 Universal Exposition.

U.S.A. ABRAHAM LINCOLN. By Jules Édouard Roiné (1857-1916). Bronze 171mm. Loop on the reverse for hanging (as made).  $400. Sorry, SOLD

Jules Édouard Roiné was born in Nantes on October 24, 1857. He studied under the reknown sculptor Léopold Morice. He travelled to America in 1881, where he remained until he returned to France in 1898. While in France he may have studied under the medallists Oscar Roty and Frédéric de Vernon. Roiné returned to America. As a result of receiving more commissions than he could manage on his own, he formed a partnership with Felix Weil in 1908. They earned a reputation for creating bas-reliefs, galvano designs and medals.. In 1915 he developed kidney disease which interfered with his ability to work. He decided to return to France, where he died on April 11 1916. Roiné gained a repuation and many accolades on both sides of the Altanic. His medallic portrait of Abraham Lincoln is regarded by many as the finest medallic portrait of Lincoln. After Roiné’s final departure back to France, Weil attempted to keep the business going on his own. The workload however was greater than he could manage, so his brother, Henri, joined him in establishing the Medalic Art Company, which would become the leading producer of medallic art in America. .

France. MARSHALL LYAUTEY – THE PACIFICATION OF MOROCCO. By Henry Dropsy. Bronze 68mm. $150.

Henry Dropsy was born in Paris on January 21, 1885, into a family of sculptors. He learned his craft under his father Jean-Baptiste ?mile Dropsy. He later studied at l??cole Sup?rieure des Beaux Arts. He was a professor of medal engraving at the school for many years. Dropsy became a member of the Institut in 1942 and a member of the Commission Administrative and of the Commission du Dictionaire. He created many medals. A large collection of his work is held at the Monnaie de Paris, which put on a special exhibition of his medals in 1964, the catalogue for which remains a standard reference. His earliest works are in the art nouveau style. His style evolved considerably over his long career. Dropsy died at Veneux-Les-Sablon on November 2, 1969.

Paul-Marcel Dammann, sculptor and medallist was born on June 13, 1885, at Montgerm. He studied under Chaplain. In 1908 he won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving. In 1928 he won a medal of honor at the Salon and was made a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in the following year. He designed a number of coins for foreign governments. Dammann died in 1939.
