Avril Vaughan, one of Britain?s leading medallists, was born in Twickenham in 1937. She won a scholarship to the Twickenham School of Art, where she studied in the 1950s. In the early 1960s she went to work for the designer and goldsmith, David Thomas, there she developed skills in the cire perdue casting method, in stone cutting and in enamelling. She later freelanced as a jeweler and sculptor. In 1976 Vaughan worked for the Royal Mint and modelled the coinage for Tuvalu after designs by John Donald. She served as senior sculptor at the Franklin Mint U.S.A. for a couple of years, then returned to freelance work, undertaking commissions from the Royal Mint, the Norwegian Mint and the Royal Dutch Mint. She won a Prize at the 1992 FIDEM congress for the best portrait medal. She died in 2008.

Maurice Delannoy was born on March 11, 1885, in Paris. He studied at the ?cole Germain Pilon under Charles Valton and Jules ?douard Roin?. He became a professor of drawing and worked as a medallist and sculptor. He designed coins for Morocco, Monaco and Lebanon, and a considerable number of medals. Delannoy was made a Chevalier de la L?gion d’Honneur in 1947. He died in Paris on April 26, 1972.

Henry Dropsy was born in Paris on January 21, 1885, into a family of sculptors. He learned his craft under his father Jean-Baptiste ?mile Dropsy. He later studied at l??cole Sup?rieure des Beaux Arts. He was a professor of medal engraving at the school for many years. Dropsy became a member of the Institut in 1942 and a member of the Commission Administrative and of the Commission du Dictionaire. He created many medals. A large collection of his work is held at the Monnaie de Paris, which put on a special exhibition of his medals in 1964, the catalogue for which remains a standard reference. His earliest works are in the art nouveau style. His style evolved considerably over his long career. Dropsy died at Veneux-Les-Sablon on November 2, 1969.

A truly outstanding work. The nineteenth century medal series The Most Remarkable Edifices of Europe by Belgian medallist is examined in detail. The work begins by providing a biographical background for Wiener, integrating two primary sources, supplemented by information from Wiener family descendants. The overall medal series is then addressed starting with its inception as defined in Wiener’s original prospectus through its quietly incomplete conclusion. The scope of the series, its range of issue dates, and elements and characteristics of its production are presented. For each edifice commemorated, the associated medals, including new and unpublished varieties, are presented, legends translated, die characteristics examined, contemporary supporting documents cited, issue dates revised, and source images used by the artist are identified in limited cases. Where applicable instances of divergence between the state of the actual monument and Wiener’s renderings are noted as well. The intent of the work is to provide a greater understanding of the medal series through a contextual approach.

1932, France. CONCOURS MUSICAL DE ROANNE. By Claude Mascaux (1882-1965). Gilt bronze 50mm. $175. Sorry, SOLD (August, 2022)

Léon-Claude Mascaux was born in Saint-Germain-en-Lay (Yvelines) on June 13 1882,  He studied under the sculptors Landowski and Bouchard. He first exhibited at the Salon of the Société des Beaux Arts in 1921. In 1924 he won a medal in the artistic comptetion of the Olympic Games. In the following year he won a Grand Prix at the Exposition des Arts Déoratifs et Industriels Moderns for a series seven sports-themed medals. Unlike his contemporaries, he eschewed the reducing machine and cut his models directly into the plaster in the actual size of his intended medals. His medals typically reflect a strong Art Deco style. Mascaux died at Fontainebleau on March 8 1965.

Pierre Turin was born in Sucy-en-Brie (Val-de-Marne) on 3 August, 1891. He trained as a steel engraver and became a student at the École Nationale Supèrieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He studied medal engraving under Henri Auguste Jules Patey and Fréderic-Charles Victor de Vernon. He participated several times in the competition for the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving, receiving a deuxième second Grand Prix in 1914, a premier second Grand Prix in 1919 and finally winning the competition in 1920. He had a distinguished career as a medalist and designer of coins.  He is noted for his many works with a bold, Art Deco style, in particular the prize medal from the 1925 Exposition Internationale Des Arts Decoratifs Et Industriels Moderns in Paris. In 1938 he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur. Turin died on July 25, 1968 in Sucy-en-Brie, where he had been born. (An obituary appears in the 1969 issue “Medailles,” published by F.I.D.E.M.
