Philip Nathan (1941) is a sculptor, medallist, and coin designer. He trained at Guildford School of Art, 1957-62, where he specialized in carving and terracotta modelling, then at the Royal Academy Schools, where he won the silver medal for sculpture. He joined the Royal Society of Sculptors in 1966. Between 1965 and 1968 he worked as an engraver at the Royal Mint. as engraver and designer, then for the Franklin Mint until 1973. He currently lives in Dorset, England. |

Henry Dropsy was born in Paris on January 21, 1885, into a family of sculptors. He learned his craft under his father Jean-Baptiste Émile Dropsy. He later studied at l’École Supérieure des Beaux Arts. He was a professor of medal engraving at the school for many years. Dropsy became a member of the Institut in 1942 and a member of the Commission Administrative and of the Commission du Dictionaire. He created many medals. A large collection of his work is held at the Monnaie de Paris, which put on a special exhibition of his medals in 1964, the catalogue for which remains a standard reference. His earliest works are in the art nouveau style. His style evolved considerably over his long career. Dropsy died at Veneux-Les-Sablon on November 2, 1969.

An artist of great talent, he is credited with the introduction of the Renaissance medal. He regarded himself foremost as a painter, signing his medals as such (e.g. Opus Pisani Pictoris [The work of Pisanello the painter]). Although many artists began creating medals soon after Pisanello introduced this new medium, his
medals are generally regarded as the finest of the period.
