Raymond Tschudin was born in Champigny-sur-Marne on November 2 1916. He was the son of a medalist and came early to his profession. He studied under Henry Dropsy at the École Nationale Supèrieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. In 1945 he won the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving and studied at the Villa Medicis from 1946 to 1949. He was the creator of a large number of medals, many of which have religious themes. Tschudin died at Provins on November 28 1998

Jacques Cartier was born at Arles on September 20 1907. He was taught by his uncle, Eugène Cartier, who became his guardian after the death of his father in 1916 At the age of 15, he was admitted to the Salon des Artistes Français and continued to exhibit there annually until 1940. He created works in various media, but specialized in wildlife painting sculpture. He was appointed Secretary of the Artistes Animaliers in 1929. He disliked cities and established himself at Clamart, where he died in his home on October 17, 2001.

At the age of 13 he was apprenticed to a button-making manufactory, where he was responsible for engraving dies. He later studied at the École des Art Décoratifs. In 1869 he joined the atelier of Paulin Tasset and in 1871 he joined the École Nationale Supèrieure des Beaux-Arts. He won the Premiere Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving in 1878 and a gold medal at the Salon of 1900. In 1903 he was made an Officier de la Légion d’Honneur.

Raymond Corbin was born at Rochefort on April 23, 1907. He studied under Henry Dropsy at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and succeeded him as professor of medal engraving in 1955. Corbin had a distinguished career, which included creating many medals and designing two commemorative coins for the French Mint. He won various honors. He died at Boulogne-Billancourt on March 1, 2002.

Roger Baron, sculptor and medallist, was born in 1907. He was a student of Paupion and Wlérick and he worked in the atelier of Maxime Real del Sarte.

Paul-Marcel Dammann, sculptor and medallist was born on June 13, 1885, at Montgerm. He studied under Chaplain. In 1908 he won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving. In 1928 he won a medal of honor at the Salon and was made a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur in the following year. He designed a number of coins for foreign governments. Dammann died in 1939.

Jean-Baptiste Daniel-Dupuis (1848-1899), French painter, sculptor and medallist entered l’École Nationale Supérieur des Beaux-Arts at the age of seventeen. In 1868 he won the second Prix de Rome for medal engraving and the first Grand Prix de Rome in 1872. He exhibited regularly at the Salon. In 1898 he was made an officer of the Légion d’Honneur. Daniel-Dupuis died tragically in 1899, when he was shot in his sleep by his wife, who had a history of mental illness. His wife then turned the gun on herself and committed suicide. Daniel-Dupuis created an extensive body of medallic works.
