Rev: A flying female holding two shields; bolts of lightning in the background. In its original, circular cardboard box. Patina on the reverse slightly uneven. $75. ———– Paul Belmondo was born in 1898. He studied at the ?cole des Beaux-Arts d?Alger then at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He worked in the ateliers of Jean Boucher and Charles Despaiu. He won the Blumenthal prize in 1926 and went on to attain many other distinctions during a long career. He created an extensive body of medallic art and in 1976 the Monnaie de Paris made a special exhibit of his works.

He studied under Cavelier, Chaplain and Tasset and, on the urging of Chaplain, took part in the competition for the Grand Prix de Rome in medal engraving. He placed twice before eventually winning in 1887. His works exhibit a strong influence by Roty. Vernon won many accolades and in 1900 was made a chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur. He died in 1912.

He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Fran?ais, where he received an honorable mention in 1888 and a second class medal in 1908. He died at Gentilly (Seine) on November 8 1925

Rau died in Brussels on June 29 1966.

1964, France. CAISSE FRATERNELLE DE CAPITALISATION. By Henry Dropsy. Bronze 68mm. $100. ——– Henry Dropsy was born in Paris on January 21, 1885, into a family of sculptors. He learned his craft under his father Jean-Baptiste ?mile Dropsy. He later studied at l??cole Sup?rieure des Beaux Arts. He was a professor of medal engraving at the school for many years. Dropsy became a member of the Institut in 1942 and a member of the Commission Administrative and of the Commission du Dictionaire. He created many medals. A large collection of his work is held at the Monnaie de Paris, which put on a special exhibition of his medals in 1964, the catalogue for which remains a standard reference. His earliest works are in the art nouveau style. His style evolved considerably over his long career. Dropsy died at Veneux-Les-Sablon on November 2, 1969.

Edge bump on the reverse. $225. Sorry, SOLD (January, 2024) ———- Paul-Marcel Dammann, sculptor and medallist was born on June 13 1885 at Montgerm. He studied under Chaplain. In 1908 he won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving. In 1928 he won a medal of honor at the Salon and was made a Chevalier de la L?gion d?Honneur in the following year. He designed a number of coins for foreign governments. Dammann died in 1939.

France. JOHANNES OCKEGHEM, Franco-Flemish composer. By Pierre Turin. Bronze 68mm. $90. ———– Pierre Turin was born in Sucy-en-Brie (Val-de-Marne) on 3 August, 1891. He trained as a steel engraver and became a student at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. He studied medal engraving under Henri Auguste Jules Patey and Fr?deric-Charles Victor de Vernon. He participated several times in the competition for the Grand Prix de Rome for medal engraving, receiving a deuxi?me second Grand Prix in 1914, a premier second Grand Prix in 1919 and finally winning the competition in 1920. He had a distinguished career as a medalist and designer of coins. He is noted for his many works with a bold, Art Deco style, in particular the prize medal from the 1925 Exposition Internationale Des Arts Decoratifs Et Industriels Moderns in Paris. In 1938 he was made a Chevalier of the L?gion d?Honneur. Turin died on July 25, 1968 in Sucy-en-Brie, where he had been born.
